James Warwood
See the Bible through the eyes of the world.
As Francis Chan rightly points out in his trailer, the world needs the Word of God. So Crossway has produced this low-cost, rich-content Study Bible for the English-speaking world. Saying that, the hardback edition I’m holding in my hand doesn’t feel ‘cheap’. In fact, if you hadn’t told me, I would have guessed a much higher RRP price than £18.99.
And opening it was a pleasant experience as well. Inside I found a two-colour interior (grey & beige) - which helps maps and study notes standout, all the content from the popular ESV Study Bible (reworded to help readability) and articles written by Christian leaders around the globe. Plus, when you purchase it, you’ll find a slip of paper with an access code to view, use and personalise an online version. I was impressed.
The idea is admirable; to produce a Bible that will be useful to every culture (as long as they can read English). If your church has links with other churches, charities, or orphanages overseas here’s an affordable Bible to send them or take with you the next time you visit. Not only is it rich in study help but it’s very readable for people who speak/read English as a second or third language.
My only complaint with Crossway would be that, when including Christian leaders from around the world, they missed off TWO continents (Europe & South America). How they managed this I have no idea, but their intentions are pure and praiseworthy and I’m sure this can be addressed in the next revision so it can truly live up to its name.
