In Short
What does Matthew 6:33 mean? To "seek first the kingdom of God" means to prioritise God's rule, will, and righteousness above your own daily worries and ambitions. Instead of being consumed by anxiety over money, food, or the future, Jesus promises that if we focus our ultimate attention on obeying and trusting Him, God will take care of our physical needs.
If you have spent any time in church or browsing Christian social media, you have likely heard this famous verse from the Gospel of Matthew:
"But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you." — Matthew 6:33 (KJV)
It is a beautiful, comforting piece of poetry. You will find it painted on coffee mugs, framed in living rooms, and quoted in sermons. But when you are sitting at your kitchen table worrying about how to pay the bills, a verse like this can sometimes feel a bit abstract.
What does a "kingdom" have to do with your daily stress? And what exactly are "all these things" that God promises to add to you?
To unlock the life-changing power of this verse, we have to look at exactly what Jesus was talking about right before He said it.
The Context: The Sermon on the Mount
Matthew 6 is located right in the middle of Jesus' most famous teaching: The Sermon on the Mount.
In the verses leading up to verse 33, Jesus is addressing one of the most universal human struggles: anxiety. He looks at the massive crowd gathered on the hillside and points out how much time they spend worrying about their basic needs: what they will eat, what they will drink, and what clothes they will wear.
Jesus gently reminds them to look at the birds of the air and the lilies of the field. The birds don't hustle, stress, or hoard food in barns, yet God feeds them. The flowers don't work or spin thread, yet God clothes them in beauty.
Jesus then asks a piercing question: "Are ye not much better than they?" (Matthew 6:26 KJV).
What Does "Seek First" Mean?
It is within this exact context of crushing daily worry that Jesus delivers His solution in verse 33: "But seek ye first..."
Notice the word first. Jesus isn't saying that our jobs, our bills, or our families don't matter. He is talking about priority.
When we wake up in the morning, what is the very first thing that captures our attention and our energy? For most of us, it is our anxiety. We immediately start seeking solutions to our problems, seeking more money, or seeking control over our unpredictable lives.
Jesus is offering a radical alternative. Instead of making your worries the king of your life, make God the King. To seek His kingdom means to actively pursue His will, His character (righteousness), and His presence before you try to fix everything yourself.

The Promise: "All These Things Shall Be Added"
What happens when we finally let go of our obsessive worry and decide to prioritise God's kingdom? Jesus gives us a stunning promise: "and all these things shall be added unto you."
"All these things" refers to the exact things Jesus just finished talking about: food, clothing, and the basic necessities of life.
This isn't a magical formula to get rich. Jesus isn't promising that if you read your Bible, He will give you a luxury car or a mansion. He is promising provision. He is promising that if you carry the weight of His kingdom, He will carry the weight of your daily needs. You don't have to carry both.
