Let’s be honest: modern life is exhausting.
Between the morning school run, a demanding job, cooking dinner, managing a household, and trying to get enough sleep, your daily schedule is likely pushed to the absolute limit. For many Christians, the desire to spend time in God’s Word is there, but the energy simply isn't.
When you finally get a moment to sit down at 9:00 PM, opening a heavy, complex theological book feels like running a marathon. Instead, we reach for our phones, scroll through social media to unwind, and then carry a quiet sense of guilt that we missed our "quiet time" again.
If this sounds familiar, you need to hear this: God wants your heart, not a perfect attendance record. Building a daily rhythm of reading Scripture shouldn't be a heavy burden. If you are struggling to make time for God's Word, here are four practical, guilt-free tips to help you build a sustainable habit.
1. Stop Waiting for the "Perfect" Time
Many of us have a romanticised vision of what Bible study should look like: an hour of uninterrupted silence, a perfectly brewed cup of coffee, and a glowing sunrise.
If you wait for that perfect scenario, you will read your Bible about three times a year.
Embrace the messy margins of your day. You can listen to an audio Bible on your commute. You can read a single Psalm while waiting in the school pickup line. You can read a proverb while the pasta water is boiling. Five minutes of genuine connection with God in the middle of a chaotic Tuesday is infinitely better than zero minutes.

2. Practice "Habit Stacking"
One of the most proven ways to build a new habit is to "stack" it on top of an old one.
Look at your daily routine and identify something you already do every single day without fail. Do you brew a cup of coffee at 7:00 AM? Do you eat lunch at your desk at 12:30 PM? Do you sit in a specific chair when you get home from work?
Take your Bible and place it right next to your coffee machine, or leave it on your office desk. Tell yourself, "While my coffee brews, I will read one chapter." By attaching your reading to a habit that is already on autopilot, you remove the need to "find" extra time.
3. Remove the Visual and Mental Friction
Have you ever tried to read a book, but the font was so tiny, and the words were so complicated that your brain just gave up?
When you are trying to read at 6:00 AM before the kids wake up, or at 10:00 PM when your brain is fried from work, your eyes are tired. If you are trying to read a Bible with microscopic 7-point font and archaic 17th-century grammar, you are creating massive friction. You are making it unnecessarily hard on yourself!
One of the easiest ways to become more consistent is to swap your Bible for an NLT Large Print Bible.
- The Translation: The NLT (New Living Translation) is a highly accurate but incredibly conversational translation. It reads smoothly, just like a modern novel, which is perfect for a tired mind.
- The Print Size: Upgrading to a Large Print edition instantly reduces eye strain. It makes the physical act of reading relaxing rather than a chore.
4. Give Yourself Grace
If you miss a day, or three days, or a whole week, do not let guilt keep you away.
The enemy loves to use guilt to convince us that, because we broke our reading streak, we might as well give up entirely. But the Bible is not a textbook you are being graded on; it is a table where your Heavenly Father is inviting you to sit and eat.
You don't apologise for missing meals; you just sit down and eat the next one.
Start small today. Pick up your Bible, choose a Gospel like Mark or John, and read just one paragraph. The God of the universe is excited to meet you right where you are, no matter how busy your day has been.
