It’s a universally frustrating experience. You are in a deep sleep, but suddenly your eyes snap open. You roll over, look at the glowing numbers on your alarm clock, and it is exactly 3:00 AM.
If this happens to you frequently, it is easy to feel a sense of dread. For decades, movies and urban legends have branded 3 AM as the "witching hour" or the "devil's hour". It was a time when the veil between the physical and spiritual worlds is supposedly at its thinnest and evil was at its peak.
But as a Christian, what should you actually believe about 3 AM?
If you look at the Bible, you won't find any mention of a "witching hour." Instead, you will find something incredibly encouraging. In Scripture, the hours between 3 AM and dawn aren't a time of demonic activity; they are the exact hours when God historically steps in to perform His greatest miracles.
Here is what the Bible actually says about 3 AM, and what you should do the next time you wake up in the dark.
The Ancient Clock: The Fourth Watch
To understand 3 AM in the Bible, you have to understand how people told time in the ancient world. They didn't have 12-hour digital clocks. During the 1st century, the Roman Empire divided the night into four military "watches":
- First Watch: 6:00 PM – 9:00 PM
- Second Watch: 9:00 PM – 12:00 AM
- Third Watch: 12:00 AM – 3:00 AM
- Fourth Watch: 3:00 AM – 6:00 AM
When your clock strikes 3 AM, you are entering what the Bible calls the Fourth Watch of the night. It is the darkest, coldest, and most exhausting part of the night, right before the sun comes up.
And throughout scripture, the Fourth Watch is when God moves.
3 Famous Biblical Events During the Fourth Watch
When the Israelites or the Apostles were exhausted, terrified, and stuck in the dark, God routinely showed up between the hours of 3 AM and dawn.
1. The Parting of the Red Sea (Exodus 14) The Israelites were trapped. The Red Sea was in front of them, and Pharaoh's deadly army was charging up behind them. They spent the entire night in terror. But the Bible tells us exactly when God moved to save them: "During the last watch of the night [the morning watch], the Lord looked down from the pillar of fire and cloud at the Egyptian army and threw it into confusion" (Exodus 14:24). God delivered His people right at the 3 AM watch.
2. Jesus Walking on Water (Matthew 14) The disciples were trapped in a boat in the middle of the Sea of Galilee. A violent storm was raging, and they had been rowing against the wind all night in the pitch black. They were exhausted and terrified; they were going to drown. But Matthew 14:25 tells us: "Shortly before dawn [in the fourth watch of the night], Jesus went out to them, walking on the lake." Jesus didn't show up at sunset. He stepped into their storm at 3 AM.
3. The Resurrection of Jesus (Matthew 28) The greatest miracle in the history of the universe took place in the early hours of the morning. While the exact hour of the resurrection isn't stamped with a time, the Gospels tell us that Mary Magdalene and the other women went to the tomb "at early dawn" (Luke 24:1). The ultimate victory of light over darkness happened as the Fourth Watch was ending.
Why Do You Keep Waking Up at 3 AM?
If you find yourself repeatedly waking up at 3 AM, do not let pop culture convince you to be afraid.
While there are certainly biological reasons for waking up (like sleep cycles, stress, or caffeine), many Christians throughout history have viewed waking up in the Fourth Watch as a gentle, spiritual invitation from the Holy Spirit.
When the house is completely quiet, there are no unread emails, the children are asleep, and the distractions of the world are shut off. It is the perfect time to pray.
In the Psalms, King David frequently talks about praying in the middle of the night: "I remember you upon my bed, and meditate on you in the watches of the night" (Psalm 63:6).
What to Do Next Time You Wake Up
The next time you wake up at 3 AM, don't grab your phone and start scrolling through social media. Instead, try this:
Keep a Journaling Bible or a dedicated Prayer Journal on your nightstand. When your eyes open in the dark, turn on a small lamp, open your Bible to the Book of Psalms, and spend ten minutes simply talking to God. Write down the anxieties that are keeping you awake, and hand them over to the God who walks on water during the Fourth Watch of the night.
