Westminster Faith Debates Begin

The first Westminster Faith Debates get underway today, with discussion of religious faith in a culturally diverse society.

Research shows that Britain is now one of the most diverse societies in the world, with a multitude of ethnicities, world views and beliefs to be found on every high street.

But what does this huge range mean for the place of religious belief in society?

This is the subject of the first Westminster Faith Debate, which will be held tonight at ’61 Whitehall’ a prestigious venue in central London.

Debaters will consider whether government can now ‘Do God’ in contrast to the famous statement by Alastair Campbell when the Labour Party were in power.

And will consider whether in fact faith and religion have a greater role than ever to play in positively engaging a ‘super diverse’ society.

The debate will feature the Attorney General Dominic Grieve, and Trevor Philips, chair of the Equality and Human Rights Commission. They will debate points raised by papers presented by Dr Therese O’Toole, and Professor Kim Knott.

The debates begin at 5.30pm.
