‘BBC Songs of Praise’ goes large in this Albert Hall hymn fest of best loved worship words and music. If you’re wondering who to buy it for, just take a look at the sell-out audience on the video clip. Despite the cameraman’s best efforts to fill the shots with young ‘Promenaders’ giving it their all, it’s a CD/DVD combo for the over fifties... if not over seventies. And to be fair to older Christian folk, they deserve well produced quality live recordings as much as the next generation... and the one after that.

The arrangements rendered up by the All Souls Orchestra (trendily branded ASO) are creative and classy supporting the massed voices, star solo artists and packed-in congregation. The hymns, songs and performances range form the triumphant to the sentimental, but altogether offer an enjoyable evening’s entertainment for audiences of a certain age. And for them – God bless ‘em, it’s got to be a 5-star gift!
