Following on from our conversation about Red Letter Christians, I wanted to delve deeper into Tony Campolo’s life and theology. A quick Google search had turned up more than a few websites accusing the professor of heresy.
It’s a confrontational and offensive word that is often thrown at well-known Christian leaders from websites with the word ‘discernment’ in the title. But Campolo’s story stands out. Why? Well, you don’t meet many people who have been put on a literal theological trial.
The year was 1985 and Tony had been dropped from some high profile speaking engagements because his book A Reasonable Faith stated “Christ lives in all human beings, regardless of whether they are Christians."
Heresy & Matthew 25
Looking back on that time, Tony remembers entire magazines being devoted to debating the issue.
“Those that took the position that Christ does come to us sacramentally through the poor and the oppressed have won the day. Groups like World Vision, Compassion International and Prison Fellowship all go to the 25th chapter of Matthew and say ‘what you do to the least of these you do to Christ himself’.
“To say that Christ presents himself to us through the needy people in the world is in no way to suggest they become Christians through that. The reality is we become Christians by allowing the Christ who confronts us daily to become the Lord of our lives.”
But while the furor of 1985 is long gone, Tony has been immersed in plenty of controversies since. He's even written a book that deliberately tackles contentious issues called Speaking My Mind. While he doesn't shy away from tough issues, he admits being labeled a heretic bothers him.
“The only reason they call me a heretic is because I raise questions about certain political isues. They then go through everything I’ve ever wrote to find some incy wincy bit they can hammer me on.”
“Most of all I get hammered that as Jerry Falwell claimed ‘while Tony Campolo doesn’t affirm gay marriage he is very very soft on gays and lesbians and he wants us to accept them as children of God.’ If that’s heresy then I’m a heretic!”
Gay marriage?
There is perhaps no more divisive issue in the evangelical world today than that of homosexuality. Even Tony and his wife Peggy have publically disagreed with each other on the issue.

“She would affirm gay marriage. I am very conservative on the issue. I believe homo-erotic behavior does not fit in with my understanding of what Paul teaches in the first chapter of Romans.”
But far from condemning those who practice homosexuality, Tony wants to be clear about his position. “I think the time has come for the church to show as much grace towards our gay and lesbian brothers and sisters as we have shown to divorced people who are remarried.”
“There is a common belief among evangelicals especially in your country that somehow this is a chosen behavior pattern or a case of psychological non adjustment. Let me just say I’m a sociologist by trade...Nobody creates a homosexual orientation. No singular factor is at work.”
“Those who say it’s genetic are speaking without empirical research. Those who say it’s a result of socialization or child abuse or a poor male image [are wrong]. A neo Freudian view that a weak father creates a homosexual orientation – Christians who reject Freud left and right grab on to a Freudian concept that has no empirical validation whatsoever.”
“Those two things I have said stand in opposition to a simplistic mindset that says we know what causes a homosexual mindset and we know how to cure it. I challenge those perceptions and at the same time say gay marriage does not fit into what Paul teaches in the first chapter of Romans.”
It’s an answer that will please neither extreme. It won’t satisfy those who believe that homosexuality has a simple cause and can be cured like a disease. But neither will it satisfy those who believe homosexual practice is not sinful. Once again, Campolo escapes the theological boxes that others so badly want to put him in.
Why Evangelical ≠ Republican
Continuing our discussion on theology and politics, I ask about Tony’s friendship with Bill Clinton.
“Bill Clinton for way more than a decade has been a friend. I have met with him regularly, before the Lewinski scandal. There was a need for counseling and the press immediately became aware I would be counseling the President to keep him from the mess he was falling into. He’s been pretty good ever since then!"
I was looking forward to hearing more about Campolo’s friendship with the President when the fiery theologian gets sidetracked into talking about American party politics.
Speaking of the right leaning Republicans he says: “Their attitude toward Obama is full of hate and there are racial prejudices involved in all of that. There’s a statistic done by Princeton Theological Seminary in New Jersey. 38% of the people interviewed in the study believed that Obama is the anti-Christ. That kind of thinking is just off the chart!"
“I’m not saying he’s a bon-a-fide evangelical but does he believe in Jesus? Does he trust in Christ for salvation? Does he give evidence for having a personal relationship with Jesus? Every time he speaks at the National Prayer Breakfast he gives testimony of how he came to know Jesus as his personal Christ and saviour. I don’t know what else he could do to get rid of this image that is generated by American evangelicals.”
Today in the press if you say you’re an evangelical, it will be assumed you’re a right wing Republican
Calming down slightly, Campolo continues, realising our conversation has come full circle. “We’re back to the original thesis; why the need for a new name Red Letter Christians? Because today in the press if you say you’re an evangelical, it will be assumed you’re a right wing Republican. I don’t want to be politically labeled one way or the other. Jesus transcends political ideologies and comes down with judgment on both.”
And with that, my time with Mr Campolo is over. It's been a fascinating discussion with one of America's most prominent Christian thinkers. While it's easy to see where those who are disgruntled by his statements are coming from, it's also easy to see that the speaker has been severely misunderstood more than once. Like so many well known Christian leaders, Campolo's reputation proceeds him. Whether that reputation is a positive or negative one very much depends on who you talk to.
