What is a Comic Book Bible?

A comic book Bible (or graphic novel Bible) is a comprehensive retelling of Scripture illustrated in a dynamic, comic-strip format. The two most popular versions in the UK are The Action Bible (best for ages 8–12) and The Lion Graphic Bible (best for ages 11–17). While they are paraphrases rather than word-for-word translations, they are highly faithful to the narrative arc of Scripture. Both are appropriate for their target age groups and are widely used in UK schools and religious education (RE) to engage visual learners and reluctant readers.

What is a Comic Book Bible?

For many children and teenagers, opening a full-text Bible can feel like staring at a wall of endless grey text. With double columns of tiny print and very few pictures, it is easy to see why an already reluctant reader might feel overwhelmed and refuse to engage.

Couple this with a heightened awareness around dyslexia and a drive to make reading more accessible. Suddenly, a traditional Bible simply isn’t meeting the needs of at least 20% of today’s children and young people (Educational Entrepreneurship Lab). So, what if the Bible looked less like an educational textbook and more like a favourite adventure story?

That is the power of a comic book Bible (often called a graphic novel Bible). At Eden, we want to help you find resources that make the Word of God feel exciting and accessible. Let’s explore what these unique Bibles are, how accurate they really are, and which one is right for your child.

What is a Comic Book Bible?

Unlike simple storybooks made for toddlers, a comic book Bible is a full-scale graphic novel. It takes the major events of the Old and New Testaments and presents them in chronological order using illustrated panels, speech bubbles, and dramatic action. It is designed to capture the "epic" scale of Scripture: the battles, the miracles, and the ageless struggle between good and evil.

Our Comic Book Bible department features several outstanding editions, but two titles lead the way in popularity:

  • The Action Bible: Illustrated by Sergio Cariello, a professional artist who has worked for Marvel and DC. It has a high-energy, colourful, superhero feel that has appealed to younger readers for years.
  • The Lion Graphic Bible: Illustrated by Jeff Anderson, a celebrated British artist known for his work on the Judge Dredd series. It has a slightly more gritty, artistic, and atmospheric style.

How Accurate is a Comic Book Bible?

Because they use drawings and speech bubbles, comic book Bibles are paraphrases rather than literal, word-for-word translations. They do not contain every single verse of the Bible. Instead, they focus on the narrative flow of redemptive history, keeping the "Big Story" clear and easy to follow.

In terms of accuracy, both Bibles are highly respected and remain very true to the historical timeline of Scripture. However, The Lion Graphic Bible is often considered the most textually comprehensive and accurate of the two. Author Mike Maddox spent years ensuring the dialogue and historical details stayed exceptionally close to the original text, presenting a serious and faithful retelling of both testaments.

Is The Comic Bible Appropriate for Kids?

Yes, but they suit different age brackets:

  • The Action Bible (Ages 8-12): This is highly appropriate for early readers, primary school children and pre-teens. The artwork is bright, clean, and has a classic "good vs. evil" comic feel. It is exciting without being overly graphic, making it a fantastic transition tool for children ready to move on from simple stories.
  • The Lion Graphic Bible (Ages 11–17): Because of the Judge Dredd art style, this version is darker, more dramatic, and highly atmospheric. It doesn't shy away from the raw emotions and complex situations of the Old Testament, making it incredibly popular with teenagers and even adults, but perhaps a little too intense for younger children.

Are Comic Book Bibles Used in Religious Education?

Absolutely! Comic Bibles can be used to complement teaching in the classroom or on a Sunday morning in church.

They are incredibly useful tools for:

  • Reluctant Readers: Helping children who find dense text intimidating to stay focused and enjoy the lesson.
  • Dyslexia and Learning Needs: Providing a visual layout that is much easier for neurodivergent students to process and remember.
  • Visual Context: Showing children exactly what ancient things, like altars, Roman armour, or Noah’s ark, actually looked like.
