I’ve said it before, I’ll say it again. Coming back to anything written by Max Lucado is like putting on your favourite fluffy socks and curling up with a comforting bowl of steaming tomato soup. So I was really looking forward to reading Miracle at the Higher Grounds Cafe, his allegorical novel.
Chelsea Chambers is reeling from the death of her mother and breakdown of her marriage whilst trying to keep the cherished family cafe afloat under the ever-looming shadow of mega bucks coffee shop, Cafe Cosmos. Despite the fact she doesn’t believe in God, she’s in desperate need of a miracle.
Thank goodness for the prayers of her devout sister, because soon the miracles arrive thick and fast, in surprising ways!
The story is far-fetched, but miracles are far from ordinary aren’t they?
The characters are relatable which makes the whole novel feel like you’re spending time with old friends, as they challenge you, love you and help you to grow. It’s a gentle reminder that even a little faith can move mountains and that even at our lowest, God is nearby.
At less than 200 pages, it’s a quick read, which makes it perfect for quiet refreshment over a weekend. The book ends with discussion questions, so would be a welcome addition to any book club or small group too.
So why not find your favourite spot, grab yourself a mug of your favourite hot drink and curl up with a copy?
