“The other day I was praying over something as I was running, and I ended up saying to God, ‘Look, this is all very well, but isn’t it about time you did something if you’re there?’ Which is probably not what the Archbishop of Canterbury should say." If one quote sums up Justin Welby’s ministry, this seems most fitting. Enigmatic and charismatic, he often comes across more like a good friend or your favourite uncle than the 105th Archbishop of Canterbury.
His C.V. is extensive, boasting an 11 year career in the oil industry, prior to his ordination in 1992. Since then his ministry has covered Coventry, Africa, Middle East, Liverpool and Durham. Regularly spending times in area of significant deprivation, a far cry from the illustrious oil industry.
Certainly he is known for his wisdom, honed from experience but until recently he couldn’t add “author” to his list of accomplishments.
Last year he debuted his writing career with, Dethroning Mammon. Following the Gospels towards the Easter story, the book asks the reader what it means to put away the cross of gold, to dethrone Mammon in the values and priorities of our society and in our own lives, and through Lent to come to a new place of trust in the abundance and grace of God.
The thought-provoking read spanned bestseller lists throughout Lent and beyond, earning him an Eden award. He was also a highlight of Christian festival, Spring Harvest during the summer.
This year he releases Reimagining Britain, a close examination of British values and identity amongst political turbulence.
The main part of the book will examine a number of distinct building blocks which turn values into actions and therefore embed them.
These building blocks are: health (especially focussing on public and mental), housing and education. To which the author adds family; environment; economy and finance; peacebuilding and overseas development; immigration; and integration. Finally, the book will look at the key actors, and the role of the churches and faith groups.
Reimagining Britain is more than a exploration, it’s a call to action and a blueprint for a better, more hopeful tomorrow.
Reimaging Britain is released on 8th March and is available to order now.
