Elizabeth Cooper
One of my favourite quotes is ‘life seems but a succession of busy nothings' and this rings even more true around the Christmas period. While Christmas is meant to be a time of peace, everyone seems frantic and rushed. To balance out a busy and stressed time with the harmony of Christmas, Novellas are the perfect solution. Longer than a short story and shorter than a novel, they provide a little time away from the hustle and bustle. Here are our top pick of Novellas to escape with this Christmas.
Experience Christmas in a different way with this Christmas Novella. Liz Higgs takes a fresh look at the nativity story from the women’s perspective. Three well known women from the Bible; Elizabeth, poor in wealth but rich in the faith of God; Mary, already engaged but willing to bear God’s son, and Anna, an elderly widow yet she still waits patiently for the Messiah. The Scriptures and cultural backgrounds of the time give us a glimpse into the lives of these three very important women and their experiences with our Lord. An encouraging and biblically sound story making it a delightful read for Advent.
2. An Amish Christmas Love
These four festive Novellas come in one bumper edition which is great for reading at your own pace. I’d say each story takes about two to three hours, so you could finish them in one or two settings separately. For some lucky people you could even have a reading spree with all four on a lazy boxing day. However you choose to read them I’m certain you’ll be filled with festive faith. Below is a little overview of each story.
Three generations of broken hearted women are forced to take shelter in their basement on Christmas eve. The twist? Three potential suitors are also trapped with them. This Christmas novella is filled with romance, comedy and festive spirit.
Emma is spending her first Christmas alone after her husband’s passing, but it's far from lonely. An orange barn cat keeps coming to Emma’s house and settling on her Husband’s chair. Along with the cat, a group of young people visit. How will Emma cope with these uninvited guests? A beautiful story of going from sadness to hope that will lift everyone's spirit.
Snow Angels is a novella with two strong female leads, and deals with issues on faith and unrequited love. A former couple are brought together after being separated but will Amish David go for his old english love or stay true to his faith?
The last of in the series finishes with Ellie, who is spending time at a relative’s house, then we meet her Amish neighbour who is a single parent. As feelings develop will Ellie realise this is right where she needs to be or go back to her home in the city?
3. The Shoe Box – Francine Rivers
Bestselling author Francine Rivers certainly wrote this heart-warming novella to be read at Christmas. Its tells an inspiring story of a foster child, named Timmy, living with a young Christian couple. While he has few possessions, he has a special attachment with a mysterious shoe box. With the help of the Church community will the young Christian’s be able to give Timmy the Christmas he truly deserves. A beautiful story showing what the Christian faith really can accomplish. A lovely bonus as well as this tale also includes; Christmas recipes & traditions, and the complete NLT translation of the Christmas story. The festive collection here makes this an ideal gift for giving to a loved one.
Whether you're curled up by the fire or reading on the go, these Christmas novellas remind us to appreciate the small things in life (often forgotten at Christmas) To find out more about them and other stories check out the Christmas Store.
