It was announced in March that LifeWay Christian Resources were to stop selling “experiential testimonies books about heaven”. Officials said this decision was in
line with a 2014 Southern Baptist Convention resolution on “the sufficiency of Scripture regarding the afterlife”.
LifeWay’s decision is connected with an inquiry into Don Piper’s book 90 Minutes in Heaven which tells of Piper’s ‘experiences in heaven’ after being severely injured in a car accident and pronounced dead at the scene.
LifeWay spokesman Marty King told Baptist Press, “We decided these experiential testimonies about heaven would not be a part of our new direction, so we stopped re-ordering them for our stores last summer. Now that we’ve begun implementing the new direction, the remaining heaven visitationitems have been removed from our stores and website and will not be replenished.”
In January, LifeWay announced it would stop selling The Boy Who Came Back from Heaven after coauthor Alex Malarkey admitted he had lied about having a vision of heaven as a 6-year-old.
