Aaron Lewendon - Eden Bibles & Bible Study Specialist

From the First Noel to Last Christmas, there are lot of festive songs to chose from. From classic Carols, to the eternally smooth Bublé, to inevitably yearly rotation of pop-stars trying to catch the coveted Christmas number one. But, despite the notable Manger in the room, few of these recent songs seem able to go any deeper than a cracker joke, or acknowledge anything close to why we even celebrate.
So here’s our alternative list of new Christmas songs for Christians. Songs that celebrate faith as much as they do festivity.
His Name Shall Be - Matt Redman
Starting with barely a whisper, and ending with thundering bells and drums, it is hard to not get swept up in this track from These Christmas Lights. Halfway between a worship track and Christmas classic, it has all the hallmarks of the Christmas season, as well as a sense of wonder and awe at God’s gift.
Ding Dong Merrily On High - Rend Collective
I dare you not to shout “Ding Dong” along with this life-filled version of the Christmas classic. Gone are the solemn choirs, falsettos, and saccharine sentiments of most over versions of Ding Dong Merrily On High. Instead there is fast paced mandolins, foot stomping rhythms, the merriest accordion you’ll find this side of a pirate ship, and the infectiously catchy shouts of “Ding Dong!”. It’s almost like Rend spend their whole lives celebrating Jesus, and are glad to dust off come timeless Carols.
Adore - Chris Tomlin and Lauren Daigle
There is so much atmosphere, so much depth and soul in this song from Chris Tomlin and Lauren Daigle. From the pitch perfect sound to the immediately moving vocals, this song elevates Christmas Music’s ability to reach the heart as well as the ears. Perfect for taking a moment out to reflect on what Christmas means to you, and to the world as a whole.
I Heard the Bells On Christmas Day - Casting Crowns
I mean, how is there not a musical featuring this song? It has everything a rousing, thematic, and engaging song should have. The opener to Casting Crowns’ Peace on Earth album wastes no time in getting straight to the heart of Christmas. It’s big, anthemic, and sings of a message of hope for all humanity.
Peace Upon Earth - Hillsong Worship
Christmas is a time for surprises, and none caught me more off guard than this track from Hillsong Worship’s Peace Project release. With a timeless vocals and an arrangement straight out Golden Era Christmas music (as well as brilliant use of Chopin’s Nocturne No.2), it took all of 30 seconds to become a firm favourite of mine.
