Justice at the Heart of Liturgy

Justice at the Heart of Liturgy

Questions Unresolved

The connection between liturgy and justice has long been assumed: Faithful celebration of Eucharist would lead to just sharing of ‘the fruit of the earth and the work of human hands’. Baptizing persons of every people and nation would yield societies in which each person treats another as a treasured image of God. Regular faithful engagement with scripture would shape followers of Jesus into living words within the Word. Yet centuries of Christian practice and decades of reflection on the connection between liturgy and justice continue to produce broken human relationships shaped by colonisation, disparities based on colour and culture, and nature broken by a climate crisis worked by human hands.

Nevertheless, essays in this collection seek to engage the unresolved tension between the world in which humanity lives and the one proposed in Christian common prayer. Gerard Moore asks if the ‘law of prayer’ that guides assemblies is tainted by an imperial shape that impairs its witness. Anita Monro laments a lack of honesty in so many Christian gatherings, where confession and lament are absent, not least when assemblies gather on stolen land. Stephen Burns responds to their prompts by proposing patterns that might steer common prayer toward more authentic ‘kingdom scenes’ that signal God’s dominion. Annie Brophy applies such wisdom to her own Uniting Church in Australia, asking whether its resources for prayer measure up to that church’s stated commitment to justice in the matter of gender and reconciliation with Australia’s First Peoples. Jason McFarland and Angela McCarthy report on ecumenical efforts underway to right the relationship between human bodies at prayer and the continuous praise of the rest of creation. Might an ecumenical Feast of Creation be a step in that direction? Like so many questions posed by contributors to this volume, the path to joining liturgy and justice walking hand in hand remains unclear.

Christ Is King: A Guide For Doubters

Christ Is King: A Guide For Doubters

The Bible is under attack not only from non-believers and members of other faiths and of none, but from the church itself. Yet it is our instruction book, written by the prophets under the inspiration of God the Holy Spirit and should be taken seriously as God's truth to mankind. It is how people acknowledge God that matters. If we accept Him as the Supreme Being who created all that is and is the source of all power and love, then we will accept what has been written in His name as sacrosanct and not attempt to change the meaning of any part of that word to suit the social way of life of any one generation, as many are trying to do The centrality of the Lord Jesus Christ is vital to our understanding of the Bible because He is mention throughout the whole of our Bible, from the beginning of Genesis to the end of Revelation and therefore He is the central theme of scripture in both the Judeo and Christian sections of the Bible. Our relationship with God depends totally on our understanding and acceptance of scripture, from the way in which God sought to teach the Hebrew nation in the First Testament, to the teaching and sacrifice of Jesus in the Second Testament. What we must not do is to alter any wording in the Bible to suit our own situation; rather we need to change our way of life to fit in with God's will, not the other way around. Unless we are prepared to spend time studying the scriptures then we will have no idea of what God is seeking to teach us through the prophets or through the achievements of His Son. The study of the arrival and life of the Saviour along with His death, resurrection and ascension is very illuminating and has transformed many a life. This book, Christ IS King, is one such study that seeks to understand, using both testaments, the spiritual aspect of what Jesus Christ came to do and ultimately achieve in providing salvation to all those prepared to fully believe and commit themselves to the Saviour. Written by a professional technical author whose task was to write often-comprehensive documents with clarity, this work is written in plain language that will enable all to understand deep truths.

Draw Close to Jesus

Draw Close to Jesus

It is hard to imagine a more needed and desirable invitation than "Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest." The Gospel accounts are full of stories of Jesus noticing, meeting, and walking alongside people who were weary, worried, and wondering what to do about the challenges they faced. People a lot like you. Jesus intentionally drew close, spent unhurried time with them, and changed their lives forever.

In this unique devotional, award-winning novelist Heidi Chiavaroli invites you to draw closer to Jesus this Lent. Through imaginative retellings, Heidi brings to vivid life the stories of forty people who encountered him in the pages of Scripture. As you journey alongside them, you will gain new appreciation for the beauty of repentance, the power of redemption, and the incredible intimacy we get to experience with the One who stepped into our sin and shortcomings to offer forgiveness, abundance, and rest for our weary souls.

Christian Times Magazine Issue 106

Christian Times Magazine Issue 106

There are moments in history so powerful that they do not simply pass-they divide time itself. Moments that redefine humanity, reshape destiny, and echo across generations with unshakable truth. The resurrection of Jesus Christ is that moment. It stands alone, unmatched, unchallenged, and undefeated. It is not merely a historical claim or a theological idea-it is the cornerstone of our faith, the ultimate declaration of victory, and the living proof that God's promises never fail.

As you open this April 2026 issue of Christian Times Magazine, you are invited into that defining moment. Our cover tells the story without needing explanation: the stone rolled away, the tomb standing empty, the light pouring into the darkness, and the distant crosses bearing witness to the price that was paid. Every detail is intentional. Every element carries meaning. This is not just a scene-it is the turning point of eternity.

"He is not here: for He is risen..." (Matthew 28:6). These words, spoken over two thousand years ago, continue to shake the foundations of the world. They are not whispers of hope-they are a proclamation of truth. They are not symbolic-they are literal. And they are not confined to history-they are alive today.

In a world that constantly shifts, where truth is often redefined and faith is frequently questioned, the resurrection remains the one unchanging reality. It stands as a bold declaration that no matter how dark the night, morning will come. No matter how heavy the stone, it can be moved. No matter how final death may seem, it does not have the last word.

This issue is not just about remembering the resurrection-it is about understanding it, living it, and boldly proclaiming it.

Because He lives, we are not bound by fear.

Because He rose, we are not defined by defeat.

Because He conquered death, we are no longer slaves to sin.

These are not just comforting words-they are transformative truths.

If you are strong in your faith, let this issue strengthen you even more.

If you are struggling, let it encourage you.

If you are searching, let it guide you.

And if you are uncertain, let it challenge you.

Because the resurrection is not just a message to be heard-it is a truth to be embraced.

I also want to take a moment to express my deepest gratitude to our readers, contributors, and team. Your support, your dedication, and your commitment to truth are what make this magazine possible. This is more than a publication-it is a mission.

A mission to stand for truth.

A mission to proclaim the Gospel.

And a mission to strengthen the faith of believers around the world.

To our writers and contributors-thank you for your passion and excellence. Your work in this issue reflects not just skill, but conviction.

To our readers-thank you for standing with us. In a world that often pressures us to compromise, your support is a reminder that truth still matters.

The tomb is empty.

The promise is fulfilled.

The victory is complete.

And the question remains-how will you respond?

As we celebrate this powerful truth, let us not do so quietly. Let us celebrate boldly. Let us live faithfully. And let us carry this message into every corner of our lives.

Let our words reflect it.

Let our actions demonstrate it.

And let our lives be a testimony to it.

Because He is not here.

He is risen.

And that changes everything.

Lord, Hear My Cry

Lord, Hear My Cry

The Penitential Psalms for Lent

This book offers a reflection based on the traditional seven penitential psalms (Pss 6, 32, 38, 51, 102, 130, 143), which have been designated as such and prayed with during Lent since the seventh century. The author uses his own translation when needed for a verse or two from the original Hebrew as a foundation to offer a spiritual meditation/reflection based on life, prayer, and scripture. These core seven penitential psalms are complemented with other psalms used during Lent in the lectionary and work in conversation with one another.

The first three penitential psalms make references to the body's bones as the visceral center of the psalmist's lament. These "bone psalms" reveal a gut level reaction that serves as the entry point into a Lenten reflection or pilgrimage. These seven psalms highlight the fact that something in the past has gone very wrong for the individual or the collective group. Audiences today will notice how true that reality is for the world or for their own personal history; the fact that something went astray and somehow life has a way of catching up to the unreflective sojourner. The first step into wholeness, however, is discovered in the recognition to offer a prayer of healing. The psalmist makes this discovery, "Heal me, Lord, for my bones are shuddering" (Ps 6:3). This book will begin and end with a focus on "healing" as the essential prayer for Lent.

"Spiritual growth is hard and humble work, and what Fr. Victor Cancino offers us here is the warm hand of a guide willing to share his own journey. In Lord, Hear My Cry, we are invited into relationship with the wisdom of the Psalms and the hard-won insights of a spiritual master willing to let us into his struggles. Bridging the smallness of his mother's whispers with the transcendence of divine love, Cancino teaches us to see God in all things, especially in vulnerability."

—Cecilia González-Andrieu, PhD, professor of theology and human rights, Loyola Marymount University, Los Angeles, California

"Father Victor's reflections mirror God's kind spirit attempting to break through the pain of everyday life, especially in our Native communities."

—Ryan W. Booth/keahu (Upper Skagit Tribe)

Victor M. Cancino, SJ, lives on the Flathead Indian Reservation in western Montana and is the pastor of St. Ignatius Mission. He received his licentiate in sacred scripture from the Pontifical Biblical Institute in Rome.

Christ is Risen from the Dead

Christ is Risen from the Dead

What is the place of the resurrection in our lives? Is it a mere intellectual piece of information? Is it a change of diet, from a plant-based to an animal-based diet? The resurrection is the center of the Apostles' preaching. As St. Paul the Apostle said, "And if Christ is not risen, then our preaching is empty and your faith is also empty." If Christ's life had ended by His death and burial, then He would not have been God, but rather someone who had lived among us for a while, who had nice teachings, who died and the story ended. Then we would not have been saved, but would have still been in our sins. Therefore, we need a clear understanding of the depth and impact of the resurrection on our lives, even in our day-to-day actions and interactions, to live the life of the resurrection to its fullest.

H.E. Metropolitan Youssef was ordained Bishop in 1992 and elevated to Metropolitan in 2022 for the Coptic Orthodox Diocese of the Southern United States. His Eminence has completed a Ph.D. degree in Marriage and Family Therapy from St. Mary's University in San Antonio, TX.

From Eggs to Easter: Why the Festival Endures

From Eggs to Easter: Why the Festival Endures

From Eggs to Easter: Why the Festival Endures

Easter did not begin as a neat story with a single origin. It emerged gradually, shaped by season, belief, practice, and necessity. This book examines how a spring festival survived centuries of change, argument, and adaptation, and why it continues to be recognised even where religious observance has faded.

Drawing on archaeology, early texts, theology, cultural history, and everyday custom, From Eggs to Easter traces the development of Easter from early spring observances through the formation of Christian ritual and into modern secular celebration. It looks closely at where evidence is solid, where it is uncertain, and where later interpretation has blurred the line between history and assumption.

This is not a book of myths presented as fact. It questions popular claims about pagan origins, fertility symbols, and hidden continuity, explaining what can genuinely be supported and what cannot. Eggs, fasting, calendars, saints, councils, and communal marking of time are explored in their proper historical contexts, without romantic reconstruction.

Written for general readers, this book assumes curiosity rather than belief. It explains how Easter functioned socially as well as religiously, how it adapted to different regions and climates, and how repetition turned practical responses to spring into enduring tradition.

Whether Easter is observed in church, marked by food and family, or encountered only through public holidays and chocolate eggs, its persistence is not accidental. This book explains how that endurance was built.

Ideal for readers interested in
