You have been carrying it for a long time.

Maybe it came from a father who never said the right words. Maybe it came from a father who was never there at all. Maybe it came from a coach, a church, a marriage, a season of failure you have never fully explained to anyone.

However it arrived, you did what men do. You turned it into fuel. You built walls around it. You worked harder, went quieter, got more capable, and called all of that strength.

This book has one thing to say about that: the wound is not your weakness. It is the raw material of your purpose.

God does not remove scars. He weaponizes them.

Jacob wrestled with God at the ford of the Jabbok and walked away with a new name and a limp he carried for the rest of his life. The limp was not the punishment. It was the proof. He went in as Jacob the schemer. He came out as Israel the limper: weaker in body, stronger in identity, never the same.

Joseph spent 13 years in a pit, in slavery, and in an Egyptian prison before the calling his wound had been building finally arrived. Seventeen years old to thirty years old. Thirteen years. Not a detour. A construction project. And when he finally stood before the brothers who had sold him, he said the thing every wounded man needs to hear: You meant evil against me. God meant it for good.

Paul begged God three times to remove his thorn. Three times God said no. My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness. The weakness was not the obstacle to the mission. It was load-bearing.

The pattern is consistent. The wound and the ministry are not separate. They are, more often than not, the same thing.

The capacity you built to survive the wound -- the vigilance, the endurance, the hard-won understanding of what real pain feels like -- is the exact capacity God wants to deploy through your calling. The survival strategy and the vocation turn out to be the same movement. Fear becomes love. Damage becomes depth. The thing that was meant to diminish you becomes the instrument someone else needs to find their way through.

But it requires one thing you have been avoiding.

Not more management. Not a better strategy for keeping the wound contained. Surrender. Honest, specific, costly surrender -- bringing the thing you have been carrying to God and saying: I am done running this myself. Do with it what you want.

That is the hardest thing in this book. It is also the only thing that actually changes anything.
