False spiritual teachers proved to be a problem in the early church. There was no complete Bible that believers could refer to, resulting in false teachers pushing their ideas and influence. John wrote 1 John to correct believers' understanding of crucial issues, specifically relating to the identity of Jesus Christ. 1 John is about foundational truths that support our faith in Christ. He encouraged his readers to reflect honestly on their faith and how that faith played out in their lives. If they loved one another, it was proof of God's presence in their lives. They could not be perfect. John teaches believers that part of what it is to be a believer involves admitting our sins and asking God's forgiveness. John teaches that believers need to depend on God for relief from guilt, strength and honesty in admitting wrongs and making amends. This is all part of being in fellowship with God.
