Voted #19 by Premier Radio listeners as part of ‘The 100 Books That Changed the Church’ list curated by Premier Christianity magazine and Eden.
There is an edge to this book that most Christian publishing avoids. Francis Chan is not interested in making you comfortable. Crazy Love — one of the bestselling Christian books of the past twenty years and recognised by Premier Christianity among those that have shaped the Church — begins by inviting you to contemplate the vastness of the universe, your own smallness within it, and the staggering fact that the God who made it all is consumed with love for you. Then it asks what on earth you are going to do with that.
Chan's diagnosis of the Western church is blunt: he argues that most Christians have settled for a version of the faith so cautious, so hedged, and so comfortable that it bears almost no resemblance to the life Jesus described and embodied. He calls it being lukewarm — and he notes, with characteristic directness, that Jesus said he would spit lukewarm people out of his mouth.
The book is not heavy on theological argument. It is heavy on stories, on Scripture, and on a kind of passionate urgency that made it feel — particularly to a younger generation — like someone was finally saying out loud what they had been afraid to think.
