Voted #1 by Premier Radio listeners as part of ‘The 100 Books That Changed the Church’ list curated by Premier Christianity magazine and Eden.
There are books that inspire, and there are books that transform. The Hiding Place belongs to the second category — and it has been doing so since it was first published in 1971.
During the Nazi occupation of Holland, Corrie ten Boom and her family sheltered Jewish neighbours in a secret room behind a false wall in their Haarlem home. When they were eventually betrayed, Corrie and her sister Betsie were sent to Ravensbrück concentration camp — one of the most brutal in the Reich. What follows is not primarily a story of suffering, but of the astonishing, stubborn, inexplicable presence of God in impossible circumstances. The central message — that there is no pit so deep that God's love is not deeper still — was not a slogan for Corrie. It was a conclusion hammered out in the worst conditions imaginable.
What makes this book linger long after you finish it is its unflinching honesty. Corrie does not pretend that forgiveness was easy, or that faith never wavered. The scene in which she must choose to forgive a former guard from the camp is among the most searching passages in Christian writing.
Available in many formats ‘The Hiding Place’ can be read by children and adults alike whether you’re looking for a young reader’s edition or a graphic novel.
