A Christian whose daughter was killed in the Lockerbie bombing will appear on ‘Tonight With Trevor McDonald’ this evening, to ask if Colonel Gaddafi was responsible for the death of his daughter.
Retired Doctor Jim Swire, 75, lost his daughter Flora in the 1988 bombing, and tonight viewers will be able to see what happened when he travelled to war-torn Libya to find out who was behind the atrocity.
Swire has been a long time campaigner for truth about the Lockerbie bombing, when 270 people were killed after a bomb exploded aboard Pan Am Flight 103.
He has previously travelled to Libya and on one occasion met the late Colonel Gaddafi, handing him a picture of 24-year-old Flora, who was killed as she travelled to New York to see her boyfriend.
At the meeting Swire pressured the Libyan leader to hand over Abdelbasset al-Megrahi, an alleged intelligence officer, and former head of security for Libyan International Airlines, for trial.
But during the trial itself Dr Swire began to doubt the Libyan’s guilt.
Although Megrahi was eventually convicted of the bombing, Swire, who has two surviving children and four grand-children, does not believe he was responsible.
Indeed he went on to make friends with the convicted terrorist, and one of the most touching scenes of the documentary sees him visit Megrahi who was returned to Libya in 2009 on compassionate grounds, as he had been diagnosed with terminal prostate cancer.
‘Did Gaddafi kill my daughter?’ is on ITV1 tonight at 7.30pm.
