Full Product Description
Ever feel like you’re not in control of your thoughts? Your actions? Like you’re trapped in compulsions and behaviors that are destroying you from within? Things like:
- emotional withdrawal
In Battles Men Face, Dr. Jantz exposes the temptations that can entrap good men and gives practical steps to take to overcome unhealthy patterns. He shows you how to accept who you are (and who you’re not), say no, focus and build on the positive, and, perhaps most difficult, ask for and accept help.

The author asks readers to reflect on their own emotional and spiritual lifeThe Library Journal, Dec 2012
By far, most readers of self-help books are women, so this writer is going out on a limb targeting men for psychological life improvement. Jantz (founder, Ctr. for Counseling & Health Resources, Seattle) addresses men?s private compulsive behaviours that are detrimental to their health, work, sense of self, and relationships. He spells out negative behaviors (pornography, emotional withdrawal, consumption) and fears (inadequacy and the need to compete), as well as cures (asking for help, loving oneself enough to say no, and dealing with reality). Basing his advice not only on research, but also on case studies and notes from male support groups, the author asks readers to reflect on their own emotional and spiritual life and tie it into the reasons for current ideas and behavior.
Battles Men FaceJohnny Douglas, via The Good Book Stall
Internal male wars are plenty. OK that is if we're honest. Gregory Jantz tracks many of the thematic struggles present in a man's life. Most men are too embroiled in the battle to be able to take the objective look that Dr Jantz offers.
The chapter on emotional withdrawal is particularly strong. The questions in this chapter are top class and rummage meaningfully with the purpose and pain of cave dwelling!
The chapters though warmly written, and solid in their content, lack challenge and feel tame. It is good Christian ethos self-help but it stops short in its courage to speak to the systemic identity and woundedness of the male soul.
