The Blue Parakeet, 2nd EditionScot McKnightIn 'The Blue Parakeet', Scot McKnight seeks to show us how to read the Bible and begins in the most challenging way by suggesting there's currently an epidemic of Christians who say they believe the Bible but don't apply what it says to their lives. From there he outlines the main thrust of the book which is that we all are guilty, at least to some extent, of picking and choosing which parts of the Bible we want to apply, rather than applying it all, because some passages make us feel too uncomfortable (like a blue Parakeet amongst a flock of sparrows). The book has some limitations, as McKnight springboards into some hobby-horses here and there, but in the main, we would do well to read this and think about the Blue Parakeet passages from which we all shy away!

How to Read the Bible for All its WorthDouglas Stuart; Gordon D. FeeIn 'How to Read the Bible for All It's Worth', Stuart & Fee set out a blueprint for how to read and understand the Bible. They don't presume much, if any, prior knowledge or experience, and show us how we can mine the depths of Scripture by showing us how to handle different genres, how to engage with cultural issues, historical context, and how to understand what it all means for us today. This is a great introduction on Bible reading we would all benefit from reading.
How to Read the Bible Book by BookDouglas Stuart, Gordon D. FeeIn 'How to Read the Bible Book by Book', Fee & Stuart team up again to provide us with a survey of the Bible on a book-by-book basis. As they walk the reader through each book of the Bible, they provide us with information such as the literary form or genre, the cultural context, and the main theme of the book - all with an eye as to where this sits within the Bible. Like their other book, 'How to Read the Bible for All It's Worth', this book makes no assumptions regarding the reader and can be read beneficially by just about any Christian out there.
Help for the Hungry SoulKristen WetherellIn 'Help for the Hungry Soul', Kristen Wetherall explores the discipline of Bible reading and encourages those who have lost the desire for the Bible to get back to it for the good of their souls. Read the Bible in a Year: Calendar of Daily ReadingsRobert Murray McCheyneMcCheyne's daily reading plan was first published in 1842 as a way of setting out a structure for Bible reading which was intended to help the people of Dundee (where McCheyne was minister) experience the joy of knowing Scripture. Almost 200 years later this reading plan is probably the best-known Bible reading plan in the world, followed by millions of Christians every year. Following this plan will take us through the Old Testament once, and the New Testament & Psalms twice, all in one year, and as we read, it's incredible how often the selected chapters blend together, reinforcing one another, and help us see the purpose and unity of the Bible. Highly recommended!
Bible Reading PlanDerekThis is a great way to structure your Bible reading. Follow this plan to complete the Bible in 1, 2, or 3 years - the pace depends on whether you want to read more or less, or meditate for longer or shorter periods. But the intention of the author is that this plan will provide a way to help Christians read God's word every day in a structured way that helps us see the big picture of the Bible and how it all fits together.
ESV Daily Devotional New TestamentAlistair Begg;CrosswayThe 'ESV Daily Devotional New Testament' takes the reader through the New Testament in one year, with a Bible reading for each day of the year including comments on the passage as well as prayers to use alongside the reading. My Rock My RefugeTimothy Keller, Kathy KellerI found this devotional a really helpful way not just to journey through the Psalms in a year but also a chance to see how God works in all seasons, through the highs and the lows. The Keller's have pitched this devotional in a way that's thought-provoking but equally accessible.
New Morning MerciesPaul David TrippIn 'New Morning Mercies', Paul Tripp takes us through 365 devotions which give our souls fuel for the day ahead. Each meditation begins with a gospel thought which is followed by a longer meditation, followed by a verse or passage to read. It's an easy-to-read daily devotional with enough content to encourage us as we begin our day in thankfulness for God's new mercies.
Keep a Quiet HeartElisabeth Elliot'Keep A Quiet Heart', written by famous missionary, Elizabeth Elliot, is a brilliant daily devotional for believers who need to focus on the love of God in a difficult time, going through an unsettling season, or those who've been distracted and need to regain a spiritual focus. Journey With Me: 365 Daily DevotionsCatherine CampbellPopular author, Catherine Campbell, has written a lovely daily devotional book which provides a meditation for every day of the year. It's a large format with a generous print size and gives a passage every day along with Catherine's comments. Each meditation is taken from a verse or passage which has particularly been used by God to speak to the author so it's personal, honest, and written with feeling.
Truth For Life - Volume 1Alistair BeggThis is the first of two volumes with this title, written by Alistair Begg. He provides us with a daily reading for every day of the year which begins with a verse followed by Begg's comments, which engage the heart and mind and encourage us to live in that truth for all of our days. Helpfully, at the bottom of each page, we have the passages to read if we want to read the Bible in a year, in addition to meditation we've just read. This is an excellent devotional with which to start each day!
For the Love of GodCarsonIn my opinion this is the best daily devotional on the market! It follows McCheyne's reading plan which can be read in 1 or 2 years, and contains insightful meditations from one of our best-known Bible scholars, D A Carson. There is a depth to each meditation not found in most daily devotionals, and the author weaves the selected chapters together, helping the reader understand them better, showing that the Bible's themes are not isolated but found throughout its pages. If you're looking for a deeper devotional which speaks to the intellect as well as the heart, this is the one!
Morning and Evening Tan/BurgundyC.H. Spurgeon'Morning & Evening' is Spurgeon's daily devotional which is as popular today as it was in Victorian Britain. Each day contains a verse or passage with Spurgeon's thoughts filling the rest of the page. His comments are often pithy, and witty, but also insightful and edifying and are a great way to meditate on God's word every morning and evening.

Why We PrayWilliam PhillipThis short book on prayer helps us understand our God who speaks, the relationship we have with him, how much we rely on him for everything, and how to harness the help of the Holy Spirit as we pray. Although short in length, Philip demonstrates a profound understanding of these aspects of prayer and explains them with a clarity that will inevitably move the reader to experience a deeper and more satisfying prayer life.
PrayerTimothy KellerTim Keller was one of the most influential Christian thinkers, apologists, and strategists of the 20th century. He died of cancer in 2023 but a significant part of his legacy is this book on prayer. He wrote the book out of his own struggles in this area of life, regretting that he only truly discovered how to pray in his 50s. He viewed prayer as part of the conversation which God initiates and the process of "answering God". He suggests we understand what we know of God, what we know of ourselves, and pray these things to a God who hears when his people speak to him. When we do this it revolutionises our relationship with God and deepens our Christian experience.
If God Already Knows Why Pray?Douglas KellyThis book is so helpful for anyone who doubts, or wants to be reminded of, the importance of prayer in the life of a Christian. Written by a pastor-theologian with a life's worth of knowledge and experience, Douglas Kelly draws on this to help us see more clearly who we are coming to in prayer, why He wants us to pray, and what can happen when we do!
The Prayer That Turns the World Upside DownR. Albert Mohler Jr.This book on Prayer shows how our hearts and lives as Christians are closely linked to our prayer lives. Al Mohler guides the reader through the Lord's Prayer (and the spiritual realities it contains) in such a way as to transform our whole approach to how we live. This is a book which challenges us not to leave things as they are and let God transform us through his "model prayer"!
Explore Prayer DiaryTim ThornboroughMany people find it helpful to keep a prayer diary. This means we can record what we pray for so we are persistent in our requests and so we can express our thanks when prayer is answered. This prayer diary is structured to enable this and encourages us to trust that "God hears and answers".

If you struggle with corporate prayer - or even prayer in general - read this book!
How To Hear GodPete GreigThe follow on to the modern classic - 'How to Pray', Pete Greig, founder of 24/7 prayer movement unpacks the topic of listening to God, helping you allow the space and time for God to speak in your life. Simple but powerful principles, great for any Christian whether new or seasoned!
DeeperDane C. OrtlundAuthor of best-seller 'Gentle & Lowly', Dane Ortlund, has written another excellent book that will help the attentive reader grow in godliness. He argues that, as Christians, we shouldn't simply be trying to be better, but should be going deeper than that and dealing firstly with our hearts and the sin residing there. Essentially we do this by immersing ourselves in the great gospel truths we knew when we were regenerated, and preaching them to ourselves daily as we meditate on God's word. This is an excellent book for anyone wanting to really go deeper for their spiritual growth.
Making DisciplesCris RogersIn 'Making Disciples', Cris Rogers shows us how true discipleship isn't merely about head knowledge, but how this connects to our hearts, and how this in turns affects how we act. The author argues that it's about how we follow and journey with God, and the books walks us through a 7-week programme toward a fresh experience of true discipleship.
A Long Obedience in the Same Direction: Discipleship in an Instant SocietyEugene H PetersonEugene Peterson is well-known for writing books which Christians have found helpful for the past 50 years. 'A Long Obedience in the Same direction' is no exception as he exposes our cultural weaknesses and encourages us to faithful Christian living where the rubber hits the road! Peterson takes us more deeply into God's word through the Psalms of Ascent, and shows the reader that constant meditation on the word is the key which will "set us on a pilgrim path of wholeness in God", or as we might put it, a healthy spiritual life. Well worth reading and considering carefully.

The Divine ConspiracyDallas WillardDallas Willard's name has become synonymous with Spiritual Formation ever since the publication of 'The Spirit of the Disciplines' in 1988. A decade on from that influential book saw the publication of 'The Divine Conspiracy' in which Willard argues that we can't be passive in our spiritual growth and wait for godliness to just happen for us, but instead we should apply ourselves to the spiritual disciplines to become more like Christ. It's almost 400 pages but worth reading and applying many of the strategies Willard suggests to aid our continuing growth.
Discipleship Matters – Dying to live for ChristPeter MaidenIn 'Discipleship Matters', Peter Maiden calls all Christians to a life of radical discipleship in obedience to God's plan for us. He shows how we can give our whole lives to Christ and what this will mean for us and those around us. This is an excellent introduction to Discipleship and written in a style which makes it a book anyone can pick up and enjoy!
Dynamics of Spiritual LifeRichard F LovelaceThis is quite possibly the best treatment of Spiritual Formation in print and is definitely a modern classic. In this book Lovelace looks at Revival in the general and individual sense of the term, showing how the Holy Spirit moves both in corporate and personal ways. He argues that the Spirit must continually revive us because of the nature of the human condition and our instinct to resort to mere outward religion which doesn't really involve the heart. He shows us how we can move away from this to a more mature understanding of justification and how it leads to sanctification (and not the other way around). Lovelace argues the best way to do this - and to stimulate true spiritual formation - is to continually preach the gospel to needy people who in turn will be more receptive to a work of the Spirit and be transformed by it. Written more with pastors and church leaders in mind, Tim Keller says "This is a book we can't do without", and I agree!

Kent HughesBased on the best-selling 'Disciplines of a Godly Man', this book is written for younger men and although written in a more appropriate style for this audience, it contains much of the godly wisdom found in the larger book. It's a gripping book on an essential aspect of the Christian's life and we recommend it highly!

A Penitent PeopleHarrison PerkinsIn 'A Penitent People', Harrison Perkins looks at the spiritual discipline of Repentance and explains how this is a work of the Holy Spirit at conversion and in sanctification, and that far from being a routine or mere obligation, repentance is a joyful experience which frees the believer from guilt and slavery to sin. Perkins shows us how regular confession, both individually and corporately, transforms us and our churches. This is an excellent treatment of a much-neglected spiritual discipline and I whole-heartedly recommend it to all adult believers.

Lifebuilder Bible Study: BusynessJuanita RyanFrom the ever popular Bible study series, this Lifebuilder on the topic of Busyness will help provoke discussion and includes Bible passages, questions to help attendees slow down even when life just seems too hectic!
Too Busy to Stop?PageIn this book Ruth Page challenges us to step back from our often frenetic, chaotic lives in which we strive for the next goal or chase our next milestone - often unrelentingly. Instead of living with temporary pressures we often create for ourselves which are often wrapped up in our achievements and ambition, Page shows a better way in which we can find rest, peace, and space to focus on what's really important.
Every Day Matters: A Biblical Approach to ProductivityBrandon D. CroweBrandon Crowe has written a very helpful book on productivity, which argues that it's more about stewardship and time-management rather than rushing around doing things! He asks the reader to avoid unnecessarily busy lives which are full of distractions and focus instead on what's important so we don't become side-tracked and forget to invest sufficient time in rest, family, and spiritual disciplines.
The Busy Christian's Guide to BusynessTim ChesterIn 'The Busy Christian's Guide to Busyness', Tim Chester contends that the modern Christian is trapped in an apparently never-ending cycle of busyness in which we find an increasing number of things to do before we slow down or stop. He says this is a form of slavery which is bad for us, our hearts, and our souls. He correctly diagnoses the problem and provides a cure by advocating that we slow down, guard our hearts, and move toward sustainable living as we develop spiritual rhythms and learn to rest in God. I recommend we all slow down and read this book!
Crazy BusyKevin DeYoungI love the subtitle of this book - A (Mercifully) Short Book About a (Really) Big Problem. Kevin DeYoung writes with a heart to help you slow down and ensure your busyness isn't pulling you away from a full (but mindfully so) life with God.
Do More Better: A Practical Guide to ProductivityTim ChalliesTim Challies wrote this book because he felt that all the books he read on the subject were, despite being helpful in many ways, lacking in some key areas. In 'Do More Better', he shows us that it's better to do some things well rather than doing lots of things badly, and offers so much wisdom that it's difficult to grasp how he achieved so much in a small paperback - perhaps that's a sign of the author's ability to put his thoughts into action - I invite you unreservedly to read this book and do likewise!
Ruthless Elimination of HurryJohn Mark ComerJohn Mark Comer offers a compelling emotional and spiritual case against hurry; in favour of a slower, simpler way of life.
A Survey of the Old TestamentAndrew E. HillOld Testament scholars, Hill and Walton, take the reader through the entire Old Testament in book order, providing us with a wonderful introduction to each book of the Old Testament. They offer insights on issues of interpretation, geography, archaeology, history, and theology while exploring the main outline, themes, structure, and message of each book. I always find it helpful to read the relevant chapter when coming to read a book of the Old Testament or when preaching from an Old Testament passage, as it keeps the main purpose of the book in mind, and prevents us from going too far off-track or down the wrong rabbit-holes! This is essential reading for any serious student of the Bible.
Survey Of The New TestamentRobert Horton GundryNew Testament scholar, Robert Gundry, takes the reader through the entire New Testament in book order, providing us with an excellent introduction to each book of the New Testament corpus. He offers rich insights on issues of interpretation, culture, history, and theology while exploring the main outline, themes, structure, and message of each book. He helps the reader become immersed in the world of the New Testament, helps us see the main purpose of each book, as well as the central thrust of the New Testament. This is essential reading for any serious student of the Bible!
An Old Testament Theology: A Canonical and Thematic ApproachBruce K. WaltkeIn 'An old Testament Theology', Bruce Waltke applies his world-class scholarship, knowledge of Hebrew, and the world of the Old Testament to provide us with a coherent theology of the Old Testament. He argues that the entire Old Testament is theological and has one single overarching theme which culminates in the New Testament and the Incarnation of Christ. This is an amazing piece of work aimed at seminary students, ministers, and believers with an interest in theology, and one every would-be theologian should have on the shelf!
New Testament Biblical TheologyG K BealeIn his 'New testament Biblical Theology', G K Beale sets out to construct a theology of the New Testament rather than provide a survey of the New Testament. So you won't find a clear introduction to each book of the New Testament here, or the usual features of such a survey. Rather, you will see the New Testament in a kind of theological synthesis, showing how it is conveying a unified message and purpose from its single author in the Holy Spirit and how this links back to the Old Testament. Beale has seven main convictions which underpin this project and defends them robustly, leaving us with a tremendous resource for understanding the theology of the New Testament. Aimed more at seminary students, ministers, and lay-people with an interest in and previous exposure to Biblical Theology, this stands uniquely as the best work of its kind!
ESV Systematic Theology Study BibleChristopher W. MorganThe 'ESV Systematic Theology Study Bible' is an excellent study Bible which is more theological in content than most study Bibles. The notes are taken from the ESV Student Study Bible but enhanced by 'in-text articles' linking passage to key theological concepts and doctrines. This won't do what a top-class Systematic Theology would offer, but as one reads through this Bible, it provides excellent theological content, helps the reader engage with theological giants past and present, and shows how the doctrine of the Church is deeply rooted in the Bible.

New Bible CommentaryD.A. Carson; R.T. France; J.A. Motyer; G.J. WenhamIn my opinion this is a must-have resource for every Christian. Written by a stellar line-up of Bible scholars, the New Bible Commentary is a thorough and detailed single-volume commentary on the whole Bible which for me is the stand-out title in this category. Supported by world-class scholarship but written in an accessible way, it's intended for students of the Bible at all levels, helps us understand difficult passages when we need some help as we're reading our Bibles.
