The Good GodMichael Reeves'The Good God' is Mike Reeves' short but brilliant introduction to the doctrine of the Trinity. He looks at this biblically, theologically, and historically, and has some really helpful thoughts on the relationship between Father, Son, and Spirit including an excellent section on God's activities prior to creation. He defines and describes the beauty of the intra-Trinitarian love of the Godhead as something completely different to those found in other monotheistic religions as each Person of the Trinity loves outwardly and with selfless perfection. As the book concerns a central doctrine of the faith: the nature of the God we worship, and due to its size and readability, I would recommend this to all Christians.
What The Bible Teaches About The TrinityStuart Olyott'What the Bible Teaches About the Trinity' is a book which unpacks a difficult doctrine in a simple way. Olyott has given us a short book which contains his trademark clarity, and despite its brevity, outlines what the Bible says about our triune God. This book is recommended to any believer who wants to explore this subject a little further without reading something more technical.
The Person of ChristStephen J.In 'The Person of Christ', Stephen Wellum introduces the person of Christ, contending for his eternal divinity and exploring his incarnation, cross work, and the reconciliation we have through this. Wellum writes theologically and although this is part of a series of shorter books on key doctrines, he manages to provide us with a thorough introduction to this subject. highly recommended!
The Cross of ChristJohn StottA modern classic from theologian John Stott, 'The Cross of Christ' will help you discover how Jesus himself understood the cross, and how 'Christ in our place' is at the heart of its meaning. Understand what the cross achieved, and learn what it means to live under the cross - this is a meaty read which provides a clear articulation of penal substitutionary atonement.
What Did the Cross Achieve?J. I.This is a short book containing J I Packer's seminal article entitled "What Did the Cross Achieve?". In it he looks at the subject of penal substitution and, using the Bible and the thoughts of the Reformers, explains why this is a crucial part of the Christian Faith and what Christ did for his people on the cross. I would recommend this book to all Christians at any stage of their journey!
Anchor for the Soul, AnMallardIn 'An Anchor for the Soul', Paul Mallard looks at the cross and resurrection of Jesus and shows us how we may keep this in view even through times of stress and illness. These are the things which anchor the soul at all times, but this is perhaps especially true when things are difficult and we come to know sickness and grief. I would recommend this to any Christian as it's only 128 pages, written in an easy-to-read style, and based on Psalm 22 which has much to say on this subject!
Kept for JesusSam StormsIn this short book, Storms looks at the issue of assurance and shows how God keeps his people through the trials of life, even when we think we have strayed too far. By looking at the relevant New Testament passages, Storms argues that it's God's regenerating work, and the work of the Spirit in our lives, which provide perseverance and prevent us from losing our salvation, and give us assurance of eternal security. Recommended to readers at all levels.
HeavenMallardThis is a great book on how looking forward to eternity affects how we live today. It's a tremendous comfort to Christians to contemplate glory and Paul Mallard helps us to do just that, but rather than leaving it as a distant hope or aspiration, he brings it into the present by showing how we can live in the light of our eternal hope as we await heaven. Written with Paul Mallard's usual pastoral experience and expertise, this is a great book for anyone thinking about heaven, seeking reassurance or purpose, and helps us to keep looking heavenward.
