There are thirty books, total, in this collection, each with its own character and its own claims. The first volume, The Campaigns for the Departed, is a record of Rev. Dr. Jeff Hood's presence with death row men facing execution dates. The second volume, Collaborations, is a record of what happens when Hood works not just for the men on death row, but with them.
The third volume, Thoughts and Demands, contains the most formally rigorous intellectual work in the collection. These are the works of systematic argument - the theological treatises, the bioethical indictment of medical participation in executions, the direct address to executioners, the universalist meditation on grace and cruelty, the science fiction allegory, the contextual Gospel retelling. They require more from the reader than the campaign writings do. They also give more: a comprehensive intellectual architecture for understanding why the death penalty is not merely unjust or cruel, but is in every meaningful sense a theological catastrophe, a medical perversion, and a civic corruption from which no one in its vicinity escapes clean.
Together, the three volumes of The Execution Omnibus, 2022-2025 constitute a sustained act of witness.
