The Book of Proverbs tells the story of a noble and refined woman who generously uses her considerable wealth for the benefit of others. She built a large house with seven pillars conspicuously on the city's summit, visible to all. Afterwards, she prepares a lavish banquet and sets her table before sending out her servants to invite the simple folk to her feast. She even ascends the city heights to summon the people personally to her celebration.
In our collective literary consciousness, several novels come to mind that feature houses. Nathaniel Hawthorne's The House of Seven Gables; Edgar Allan Poe's The Fall of the House of Usher; Laura Ingalls Wilder's Little House in the Big Woods, among many others. However, of all the houses within the literary world, none holds the same renown, virtue, or mystery as The House of Seven Pillars.
What is the meaning and significance of the house in Proverbs 9:1? Interpretations are plentiful, especially concerning the seven pillars. While some explanations are good, others plausible, and some esoteric, none are completely satisfactory. We believe the key to the meaning lies in the unique and mysterious connection between divine wisdom and biblical worship. Join us as we unlock the enigma and explore the House of Seven Pillars.
