Woven Into Prayer
“Prayer and faith are anything but dead”, are the opening words of this book that will be an immensely helpful companion for anyone seeking a new pattern of daily prayer. Perhaps the pattern you’ve been using has grown stale and over familiar, and you need a change. Or perhaps your prayer life feels undisciplined and lacking in structure, and needs ordering. Either way, you would benefit from giving Angela Ashwin’s suggested pattern a try. It contains a section for each ‘season’ of the Christian year, plus two sections to cover ‘Ordinary Time’. A ‘Short Order of Daily Prayer’ is provided for each section, incorporating Psalms and plenty of other scriptural material (with alternatives) and prayer suggestions. I specially appreciated the chapter in each section entitled ‘A Quiet Space’, full of guidelines for meditation, and often featuring an icon. A great help. But let’s be clear. This pattern is not to be followed slavishly or legalistically. The author says she has made it “as flexible as possible”, designing its material to expand or contract depending on how busy we are. The book’s aim is to “deepen your relationship with God rather than becoming just one more burden”.
