John Main, a Benedictine monk, is regarded as a great teacher and an inspiring spiritual guide. From his teaching developed The World Community for Christian Meditation. This book consists of a series of talks given to groups on the subject of meditation. He defines meditation as a pilgrimage to one’s own centre and throughout the book he gives practical lessons on how to meditate, how to achieve silence and stillness. Simplicity and stillness are at the heart of prayer and meditation together with the repetition of a prayer-phrase or mantra. These talks and the practical advice in them are themselves simple and helpful. There is little that is philosophical or theological in his analysis of the state of mind of the person who becomes absorbed in the mystery of God. What is revealed to us through proper meditation is truth and reality, freedom from regretting the past and from fearing the future. This is not only a practical book but an inspiring one.
