Celebrating the Seasons
Books of daily devotional readings have existed for centuries so when one comes along which stands out in some way, one can rejoice. In the case of this book, it's not simply that I have discovered much from it, but so has my husband, and in turn we have bought copies for friends and family who have been equally refreshed by the readings within it. The order is based on the Church of England lectionary so you commence with a reading for Advent Sunday, indeed four readings actually, as for major occasions a choice is given. I particularly like the fact that the readings come from a diverse range of writers and through many centuries of Christian thought. Often there is an extract from a writer of whom you've never heard, you read and are bowled over by the thoughts and the writing, so are nicely catapulted out of the cosy realms of your normal reading. As one recipient of the book said “It covers writers I would never have normally come across in life and enables me to read from writings I'd never feel inclined to read in full but can read in this book and sample a jewel of thought.” At the time of writing this review, the book has been around for over ten years, but the fact that it is still in print says something, and I hope the Publisher will keep it available for some time to come
