The 1169 Provincial Synod of Strigonium (Esztergom), convened by King Stephen III of Hungary, sought to address the troubling sale of ecclesiastical positions and properties, which compromised the integrity of the clergy and church discipline. Archbishop Luke, inspired by the example of Thomas of Canterbury, convened the synod to remind the king of the importance of preserving the church's autonomy. Following discussions, King Stephen agreed to restore church rights and relinquished his powers over bishops, thus preventing potential conflicts similar to those in England. The synod concluded with the reaffirmation of ecclesiastical authority and the protection of church properties.
