Dr Sheila Cassidy, famous for her work in pastoral care and the hospice movement, details in this new book the loss of the Catholic faith which had sustained her for sixty years. Her argument now is that God is too narrowly restricted within the Catholic church and is to be found more fully and inspiringly outside, in all the works of nature and of mankind. She is not bitter against the faith in which she was brought up and from which she gained so much. She has now moved on from institutional religion to a wider appreciation of God’s splendour in everything she sees around her, the God that gave His life that we may have it more abundantly. This life is not to be found in sacraments and ritual but within us and around us. In some ways she still regards herself as a Catholic who does not go to mass nor receive the sacraments. This is one woman’s odyssey, a personal view, and an honest one which is always interesting and informative. Many will agree with her arguments, many will disagree. It will stimulate controversy and this is what makes the book very readable.
