None of our Top 3 in this section are technical, but are excellent entry points to Church history and the historic creeds. If you want an overview of the creeds and councils of the early Church, Know the Creeds & Councils is the perfect starting point. If you want to read and understand the most significant creeds then The Nicene Creed by Kevin DeYoung provides a brief but insightful way into the Nicene Creed, while J I Packer's Affirming the Apostles' Creed does the same for the Apostles' Creed. Both are relatively short books that give the reader a flavour of these ancient texts, connecting modern believers to those from centuries past, and the truths for which they contended. Reading these books and understanding the history and doctrines presented in the Creeds prevents us from repeating mistakes these great creeds corrected - take up and read!
