Six close Mennonite friends from Kulpsville, Pennsylvania, Brian Yoder, Debbie Stoltzfus, Sam Smucker, Sarah Lapp, Noah Brenneman, and Ruth Detweiler, set out for a camping trip in Allegheny National Forest. What begins as a light-hearted escape filled with Sam's laminated checklists, Sarah's eleven varieties of trail mix, fireside stories, and long-simmering romantic tensions shifts dramatically when Brian walks into the hemlock woods one night and disappears.
He returns a few days later, physically unharmed but profoundly changed. Around the final campfire, he recounts a five-minute encounter with an ordinary, unremarkable stranger at a remote creek. In those minutes, the man restores Brian's quietly eroding faith, offers each friend startlingly precise and compassionate insight into their private struggles and hidden gifts, miraculously heals a cut on Brian's hand, and reveals that the six of them are meant to do something important together.
In the hours and days that follow, truths surface, old grievances are forgiven, and quiet love stories are finally spoken. By the time they drive home, the friends have moved from separate lives of quiet erosion into a shared sense of purpose, belonging, and forward direction.
