Stanisława Leszczyńska has become known as the Midwife of Auschwitz. She spent two years imprisoned in that infamous Nazi concentration camp, and during that time worked as a midwife for the many women who arrived pregnant. She delivered their babies – over three thousand of them – in horrifyingly squalid conditions, without basic medical supplies, and risked being shot by the guards every time she had to walk the length of the camp to fetch a bucket of water. Miraculously, she never lost a baby or a mother in childbirth or from postpartum infection. This first traditional biography in the English language not only recounts Stanisława’s time in Auschwitz, but tells the story of her remarkable holiness in living her vocation as a wife and mother, her devotion to the women she served as a midwife, and the deep faith and life of prayer that blossomed into the heroic virtue for which she is remembered.
Striking photography from Stanisława’s life and from Auschwitz, as well as a translation of Stanisława’s full testimony about her time in the concentration camp, accompany the text and bring the story of this holy woman to life.
