At four years old, Keith C. Pretlow witnessed the kind of violence that could have shattered his life forever. Instead, through grief, faith, discipline, and the unwavering love of those who refused to let him fall, he began a journey from pain to purpose.

From Ashes to Authority is a deeply personal and powerful memoir about surviving trauma, defying expectations, and discovering that broken beginnings do not have to determine a person's future. From the streets of North Philadelphia to the classrooms, kitchens, military spaces, and leadership roles that shaped him, Dr. Pretlow shares how education, mentorship, and spiritual grounding helped transform loss into legacy.

This is more than a story of perseverance. It is a testimony of healing, identity, Black excellence, and the life-changing power of people who choose to see potential where others only see problems. With honesty, heart, and hard-won wisdom, Dr. Pretlow shows that the odds are not destiny and that purpose can rise from even the deepest ashes.

For anyone who has ever been counted out, misread, wounded, or forced to fight for a future they could not yet see, this book is proof that survival can become strength and pain can become authority.
