While growing up on his grandparents' farm in Thailand in the fifties, Serk learns

how to herd cows, cut rubber, and transplant rice seedlings. He knows not to

go into the woods where he has heard strangers are beheading children. As he

matures, Serk encounters many people along the way that include a little girl he names Pruk,

a foreigner he saves from being hunted, and a young woman, Dina, who eventually helps

cure an illness that has left him homebound and weak for years.

After he is healed, Serk becomes determined to work hard to make up for lost time. As

he faces setbacks, he becomes convinced that his lack of education, wealth, and status is

preventing him from finding true love. Although his humility and helpful attitude cause

many young ladies to fall in love with him, Serk does not believe their interest will lead

to marriage. But when a strange encounter on a stormy afternoon leads him to the one

who will be his wife, Serk has no idea that events are about to occur that will add further

unforeseen changes to his life.
