Harriet Sherwood has always adored her grandmother. But when Harriet decides to follow in her footsteps to fight for social justice, she certainly never expected her efforts to land her in jail. Nor did she expect her childhood enemy and notorious school bully, Tommy O'Reilly, to be the arresting officer. Languishing in a jail cell, Harriet has plenty of time to sift through the memories of the three generations of women who have preceded her. As each story emerges, the strength of her family - and their deep faith in the God of justice and righteousness - brings Harriet to the discovery of her own goals and motives for pursuing them.
"Austin can't seem to write a bad novel, and this one is no exception. Her newest, Though Waters Roar, follows her typical trajectory of fine writing, an engaging story and interesting history. Austin weaves... stories through Harriet's memories, creating well-honed characters before finally bringing Harriet to a place of understanding. This is an entertaining and engaging faith-based tale sure to hit bestseller lists and the awards circuit." --Publishers Weekly

Once again, Lynn Austin proves she has flawless writing skills. The first person narrator, Harriet, is an original and compelling voice. Grandma Bebe, one of the other main characters, is a wonderful creation. Austin brilliantly interweaves the four generations of women: Hannah, Bebe, Lucy, and Harriet. I found the history of women's rights in America from the 1850s to the 1920s, which is convincingly added to the narrative, to be fascinating. The ending is great because it makes the reader think about what will happen next. Though Waters Roar is, without a doubt, one of the best historical novels of 2009.
