Kay Marshall Strom sets The Call of Zulina, Book 1 in the Grace in Africa Series, in West Africa, 1787.

Grace Winslow is swept up in a slave revolt after she escapes the family compound to avoid an adious betrayal. As the truth about the fortress of Zulina unfolds, Grace begins to realise the brutality and ferocity of the family business: the capture and trade of slaves.

Despite being threatened with death in The Call of Zulina, Grace is moved by the plight of the captives.

The Call of Zulina is a powerful novel about the brutality of slavery in eighteenth-century Africa.

Kay Marshall Strom has published thirty-four books. Four have been chosen as book club selections, nine have been translated into foreign languages, and one has been optioned for a film. One of her best-known works is Once Blind: The Life of John Newton, which has been packaged with the DVD Amazing Grace. Kay travels the globe, speaking out against social injustice, especially that of modern day slavery.

“This compelling drama will challenge readers to remember slavery’s brutal history, and its heroic characters will inspire them. Highly recommended.” ‑‑Library Journal starred review

      The Call of Zulina

‘Grace Winslow, the daughter of a mixed marriage between an English sea captain and an African princess, is swept up in a slave revolt after she escapes the family compound to avoid an odious betrothal.’ Publisher
This is a novel that will have you shocked, disgusted and horrified if you haven’t heard the background to the slave trade before – or even if you have!. The author has used known facts to weave this story that had me gripped from start to finish. Grace’s parents are both tyrants in their own spheres and Grace has been brought up in ignorance of the source of her families wealth. When she joins the slaves in Zulina the slave prison, the story moves to an exciting conclusion and some sort of happy ending. The characters, good and bad, portrayed here may be fictitious but they have a distinct ring of truth about them.

The Call of Zulina is a powerful novel

Kay Marshall Strom tells her tale expertly. The Call of Zulina is written to inform readers about the horrors of the slave trade and it does this well. What I really enjoyed were the three-dimensional characters that were not preachy. I would read the other titles in the Grace in Africa series when they are published.
