Young Samuel Bodden is eight years old and is enthralled with science, space, and understanding details about the Bible, especially from his adult friend John, the owner of the local fishing supply shop.

When one day, an elder in the church lashes out at Samuel in front of John, completely impatient with Sam's fascination with the Big Bang theory, John's response shocks the elder, Samuel, and even the pastor, leading to a churchwide debate akin to a modern-day "Scopes" trial.

In fact, it also begins to reveal things about John which appear to come from a supernatural origin!
