In those days, being a potter was a subservient job. It didn't need education, just a skill passed down from generation to generation. Potters were strong and fit as they dug clay from the ground and carried it to their workshops. They cut trees and hauled logs to fuel their kilns. They used kick wheels to spin the clay into useful vessels before they ever received meager payment for their wares. One can only imagine how dirty and messy a potter and his house would have been.
