Reverencing a Darksome King

There is an old commercial for perfume that starts out with a woman's voice. She says, "If you want to capture someone's attention, whisper." There are many places in the Word of God where our attention is directed, not because there is so much information about a subject, but so little. One such place is found in the early pages of Genesis, where Abraham is greeted by the king of Salem. Melchizedek by name, he is also priest of the Most High God. More is made of him later in Scripture than when we first meet him, so, in effect, the Bible "whispers" about him at first and then shouts about him later.
You and I are living in a time where everyone wants to cash in on their 15 minutes of fame. Advertisers, publicity agents, and marketing strategists and consultants all make their living trying to help people get their slice of the world's pie. If you've ever considered hiring a firm of some kind to help you get your name out there, maybe I can save you a little money. I know their secret, and no matter how you slice it, all of them have the same plan to gain notoriety for their clients. Here it is: Shout the loudest. Yes, it really is that simple. For all their clever and catchy schemes, it comes down to helping people make enough racket that they will be heard over the din of everyone else.
But what if God has a different way of doing things? The Word says that your life is a mist that appears for just a little while and then vanishes away. To put it another way, your time on earth is just a whisper on the decibel meter of eternity. It may be that God doesn't have it in His mind for you to be rich or famous, but if you seek Him with all your heart, He will be found by you. For all who are His, wealth and fame are nothing when weighed in the balances of eternity.
Ps. 37:4-5 says, "Delight yourself also in the Lord, and He shall give you the desires of your heart. Commit your way to the Lord, trust also in Him, and He shall bring it to pass." When it comes to setting and achieving worthwhile goals, I can think of no better man than this whispering king of Salem to help you along your way.
