Religious Diversity in Ancient Israel and Judah
From non-Biblical sources, 675 different Hebrew names have been found from a total of nearly 3,000 instances, dating to the ninth to sixth centuries BC (BCE). The Hebrew Bible contains about 1,000 different names. This is just one small ‘incident’ in this remarkable book, which with the aid of archaeology and other disciplines opens up the very diverse nature of religion which is the background to the ‘religion of the Old Testament.’ The essayists who contributed to this volume tell lively tales in an engaging style, but how one longs for maps, diagrams and photographs to illuminate their complex stories.
