Why Today is the Best Day to Start Reading the Bible

Estimated Read Time: 4 minutes

An open Bible on a messy desk

We are obsessed with "fresh starts."

We tell ourselves we will start the diet on Monday. We will start budgeting next month. We will start that Bible reading plan when work calms down, or when the kids go back to school, or when the new year rolls around.

We treat our spiritual lives like a train schedule; if we miss the departure time, we decide to wait on the platform for the next one.

But at Eden, we want to propose a different idea.

We believe that today, whether it is a random Tuesday in November or a busy Thursday in May, is actually the best day to start reading the Bible. Here is why you should stop waiting for the "perfect time."

When is the best time to start reading the Bible?
The best time to start reading the Bible is today. Many people fall into the trap of waiting for a "fresh start" date (like a Monday or New Year's Day) or a period when life feels less busy. However, waiting for a "perfect" schedule often leads to indefinite procrastination. Starting immediately helps you build a habit that fits your actual reality, rather than a fantasy schedule. Spiritually, the Bible teaches that God's mercies are "new every morning" (Lamentations 3:23), meaning you never need to wait for a specific calendar date to begin again.

1. The "Perfect Conditions" Myth

We often delay reading Scripture because we are waiting for life to get quieter. We think, "I'll start when this project is finished," or "I'll start when the baby sleeps through the night."

Here is the hard truth: Life never gets quieter. It just gets different types of loud.

If you wait for perfect conditions to read the Bible, you will never read it. Why Today is Better: If you start today—right in the middle of your chaos—you are building a habit that is resilient. You aren't learning to read in a theoretical "calm" life; you are learning to read in your real life. If you can read one chapter today, you can read one anywhere.

2. The Calendar is Arbitrary

There is nothing spiritual about Monday morning. There is nothing magical about the 1st of the month. These are just boundaries we create in our heads to manage our guilt.

When we say, "I've messed up this week, I'll start fresh on Monday," what we are really doing is giving ourselves permission to ignore God for the next three days. Why Today is Better: Breaking the "Monday Mentality" destroys procrastination. It proves to yourself that you don't need a specific date on a calendar to connect with God.

3. God's Mercies are Daily, Not Weekly

There is a beautiful verse in the book of Lamentations that shatters our procrastination:

"The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases... they are new every morning." (Lamentations 3:22-23)

God operates on a 24-hour cycle of grace. He doesn't look at your calendar to see if it is the start of a new quarter. He doesn't care that you haven't read in six months. He is waiting to meet with you now.

How to Start (Without the Pressure)

If you want to start today, you need to lower the bar. Don't try to make up for lost time by reading ten chapters.

  • Just read one Psalm.
  • Just read the Verse of the Day.
  • Just read a single parable of Jesus.

The goal isn't to catch up on the past. The goal is to connect in the present.
