What Font Size is a Large Print Bible?

Aaron Lewendon - Eden Bibles & Bible Study Specialist

Bible

"For such a big book, why is the writing always so small?"

Creating a Bible that is easy to read is essential to making faith inclusive. A lot of work has gone into making the Bible readable for as many people as possible. This is done in three major ways:

  1. Translating the Bible into a version for any reading level
  2. Translating the Bible into as many languages as possible
  3. Creating Bibles where the font size is clear and legible

Making the Bible available in large print is key to opening up scripture to a wide number of people. Whether you are looking for yourself, someone you know, or just want to know more about Bible text size, here's our guide to Large Print Bibles.

In short:

Large Print Bibles (12pt font and up) and Giant Print Bibles (14pt+) make reading accessible for those with visual impairments. Popular options include Large Print Study Bibles for in-depth notes and Large Print Thinline Bibles for portability.

One: Font Size

First, find a book or Bible close to hand and check and read a few lines. Does the text feel comfortable to read? It is too large or too small? Then, see what text size is used. Many Bibles will have the information listed, but you can always look it up on Eden to find the answer. Every book will be printed in a specific font (or 'point') size.

Font size is measured in ‘points’ - the higher the ‘point’ number the larger the size of each letter in the text. The standard measurement of a point is 0.3528mm - but using another book for reference is a bit easier than getting out a very small ruler!

What is Considered "Large Print"? A Simple Guide to Font Size

There is no "official" industry standard, but here is a reliable guide to what the terms generally mean:

  • Standard Print: 7pt - 9pt font.
  • Large Print: 10pt - 12pt font. (A 12pt font is significantly more comfortable for most readers).
  • Giant Print: 13pt - 15pt font.
  • Super Giant Print: 16pt font and above.

A simple increase of 2-3 points in font size can make a world of difference in readability and comfort.

Once you have found a comfortable size, you can shop from all Bibles by point size below, or move on to step two.

Step Two: Translation

If you are new to buying a Bible, our Bible buying guide will get you up to speed in knowing which Bible translation to go for. But if you are already up to speed with which translation you want to read, then you can go straight to large print editions of the following translations:

Step 3: Binding & Size

Next check the number of pages, the overall size and the quality of the paper. A large print Bible may be so large and heavy that it’s difficult to hold, or the paper may be too thin and fragile to handle easily. More compact editions of large print Bibles are available, but the bar for what is large print changes with the size of the Bible. Large Print for a compact Bible will be similar to standard print for a larger-sized Bible.

Finally, you’ll want to find a Bible you can love and be proud of. Choose for yourself a cover design that suits who you are and makes opening and reading your large print Bible a daily delight. Our Beautiful Bibles page features some stunning editions of God's word.
