We Review The Visitation

Master-storyteller, Frank Peretti, delivers another page-turning supernatural thriller.

The cover looks very ‘cool’. At first I thought it was a fire bird; but my second glance confirmed it’s a cross. And the title is mysterious and inviting. But what about the story inside? To sum it up in one word – supernatural.

Told from the perspective of the burned-out pastor, Travis Jordan, the story is set in a modern-day equivalent of Antioch (also called Antioch). Strange visions and supernatural sightings are followed by a mysterious prophet performing miracles and claiming to be the Messiah. There are some fascinating parallels with Scripture, denominations, signs and wonders, and people’s cynicism towards them, to be read in this thrilling story.

Topping out at over 500 pages, this is no weekend book (well not at my sluggish reading pace). And to give you a heads up; it starts slowly, with some chapters that could have easily been condensed into a page. Don’t worry though, because Frank has a talent for storytelling that tempts you to keep reading through exciting highs and drowning lows.

Frank Peretti fans will tell you he’s never quite managed to write a better story than his bestselling book, ‘Piercing the Darkness’. But ‘The Visitation’ has something different to offer. It’s deeply theological, but not boring. It’s supernatural, but not far-fetched. And most impressively – it’s about religion without being religious, preachy or prejudiced towards any denomination. Big thumbs up from me!
