We Review The Little House That Stood DVD

James Warwood

VeggieTales often comes under criticism for “too much silliness, not enough Christian content”. And if that’s what you think, then here’s your proof.

Bob & his cucumber sidekick have always made me chuckle. Ever since I saw ‘We Are the Pirates Who Don’t Do Anything’ I loved this cartoon creation (plus I haven't been to Boston in the fall either, so I consider myself to be a lazy pirate too!) This DVD is testament to their success and ability to entertain the whole family - after more than 20 years and almost two generations they are still going strong.

‘The Little House That Stood’ is a clever blend of the tale of The Three Little Pigs and the Parable of the Two Builders. It’s the typical VeggieTales concoction: one-liners, quick puns, catchy songs and a moral lesson linked to the Bible. This one teaches that living by what the Bible says (love God and love your neighbour, as explained in the other episode) is the concrete foundation you should build on.

So, have VeggieTales found the balance between silliness and Christian content? No, not yet. But with every new DVD they continue to make me chuckle (especially the hot tub chase and the funny rhymes such as 'manners/totally coo-coo crazy bananas') and continue to teach kids solid moral lessons that last.
