We Review Avalon

The battle between good and evil gets political in Avalon.

Admittedly the story starts a little slow for my taste; but after the introduction of a mysterious character, I was hooked. The story is set in the 21st century, mirroring the legends of King Arthur. James Stuart is courageously fighting to save his heritage from money hungry lawyers when he discovers his heritage is much more than his parents' cottage.

James is dragged into an epic fight for the throne and the political battle to save Britain. There are many layers to Lawhead’s narrative. On the surface, it’s a gripping story with plenty of twists about something we’ve always wondered – what would happen if the Royal Family were dissolved? Scratch the surface and you’ll see parallels between King Arthur’s story and James’ life. But get underneath the skin and you’ll be hit by a spellbinding parable between good and evil.

Bottom line: this book is long, 444 pages long to be exact. But readers of this type of fiction will be accustomed to a small font size and long chapters. As always, the longer narratives are always worth it, because the characters are always richer, the twists are always tighter and the story always better.
