In the world of Bible translations, the New Revised Standard Version (NRSV) holds a unique and respected position. It's the Bible you'll find on the shelf of nearly every pastor, theologian, and seminary student. It is, by a wide margin, the benchmark for academic scholarship.
But its reputation as the "scholarly" Bible can also bring questions. What makes it the choice for universities and churches around the world? Is it accurate? Is it easy to read? And most importantly, is it the right Bible for you?
If you've ever been curious about the NRSV, this guide is for you. We’ve compiled the most common questions into one simple, comprehensive resource to give you the clear answers you need.
The NRSV (New Revised Standard Version) is a highly accurate, ecumenical Bible translation prized for its scholarly precision and use of gender-inclusive language for humanity, making it the standard for academic study, though its formal tone is less "easy to read" than versions like the NLT.

The NRSV is a major revision of the classic Revised Standard Version (RSV). It was translated by a large, ecumenical committee of scholars from Protestant, Catholic, Orthodox, and Jewish traditions. Its unique goal was to be a single, high-quality translation that could be used with confidence by academics and clergy across the entire spectrum of faith.
The NRSV is considered extremely accurate. It is a "mediating" translation, balancing a commitment to "word-for-word" fidelity with "thought-for-thought" clarity where needed. Because it was translated by such a broad and respected committee of scholars using the best available manuscripts, it is widely trusted for its precision and lack of denominational bias. It is the top choice for scholars who prioritise accuracy.
This is a key question. While the NRSV's language is modern and clear, its priority is precision, not simplicity. Its vocabulary is more advanced and its sentence structure more complex than "thought-for-thought" versions like the NIV or NLT. Therefore, while it is perfectly readable, it would not be considered the "easiest" translation for a beginner or for casual devotional reading.
This is one of the NRSV's most famous features. The translators made a conscious decision to use gender-neutral language for humanity where the original text was clearly referring to all people, not just men. For example, where a more traditional translation might say "brothers," the NRSV will often read "brothers and sisters" to accurately reflect the inclusive meaning of the original Greek.
Yes. Because the NRSV was designed to be ecumenical, many editions are available that contain the Apocrypha (the Deuterocanonical books). An NRSV with these books included is known as the NRSV-CE (Catholic Edition) and is fully approved for use by Catholic readers.
