How To Use Arts & Crafts in Religious Studies Lessons

Laura White - Eden Children's Resources Specialist

How to Use arts & crafts in RS

Religious Studies (RS) lessons offer an array of of stories, beliefs, and traditions. While discussions and textual analysis are vital, sometimes the most profound understanding comes not just from hearing about a concept, but from creating it. Integrating arts and crafts into lessons can be a powerful way to unlock student creativity, deepen their comprehension, and make learning about faith truly memorable and engaging.

Our tailored selection of Bible based arts and crafts kits provide endless possibilities for bringing RS topics to life. Here’s why and how to incorporate these creative elements into your classroom:

Why Bring Arts & Crafts into RS?

  1. Enhances comprehension: Visual and tactile activities help solidify abstract concepts and stories, making them more tangible for learners of all ages and learning styles.
  2. Boosts engagement: Hands-on projects are engaging, capturing students' attention and encouraging enthusiasm for the teaching.
  3. Encourages expression: Art provides an alternative medium for students to express their understanding, feelings, and interpretations of religious themes, especially for those who may struggle with verbal expression.
  4. Promotes Retention: When students actively participate in creating something, they are more likely to remember the lesson long after the class is over.
  5. Celebrates diversity in learning: It caters to various intelligences, ensuring that every student has an opportunity to shine and connect with the material.

Practical Ways to Integrate Arts & Crafts into Your RS Lessons

Here are some ideas, featuring products you can find on the Eden Education Hub's arts & crafts section:

  • Illustrating Biblical Stories:
    • Activity: After reading a Bible story (e.g., Noah's Ark, David and Goliath, the Good Samaritan), have students draw, paint, or create a collage depicting key scenes or characters.
    • Resources: Stock up on essential craft supplies: drawing pads, coloured pencils, paints, or collage materials. Consider story-specific craft kits that include everything you need for a visual retelling.
  • Symbolic Art Projects:
    • Activity: Explore the meaning of Christian symbols (e.g., the cross, fish, dove, bread and wine). Students can design and create their own interpretations using various mediums, perhaps even on wooden shapes or ceramic tiles.
    • Resources: Look for plain craft blanks (wood, ceramic, card), paints, glitter, and adhesives.
  • Creating Dioramas and Models:
    • Activity: Bring historical or biblical settings to life by having students build 3D models of places like the Nativity scene, the Ark of the Covenant, or a significant temple.
    • Resources: Cardboard, pipe cleaners, modelling clay, fabric scraps, and various craft embellishments can all be found to help create detailed scenes. For the Nativity or Holy Week scenes, ready-to-build craft kits are available.
  • Personalised Reflection Journals/Bibles:
    • Activity: Encourage students to decorate the covers of their notebooks or even new Bibles (with permission!) with imagery and words that represent their personal faith journey or understanding of a topic.
    • Resources: Plain notebooks, Bible journaling supplies like colourful pens, stencils, and stickers. This offers a deeply personal connection to scripture.
  • "Stained Glass" Creations:
    • Activity: Recreate the beauty of stained-glass windows using transparent paper, tissue paper, cellophane, or even paint on acetate sheets. This can be a wonderful way to teach about church architecture or the symbolic power of light.
    • Resources: Coloured transparent paper, glue, black card for outlines, or special stained-glass window decoration kits (these make a beautiful addition to any classroom window!)

Getting Started with Your Craft & Art Supplies

Before embarking on a project, consider:

  • Age Appropriateness: Ensure the craft is suitable for your students' motor skills and cognitive abilities. Most crafts are availble from ages 3+ but some trickier projects with small part are better suited to age 5+.
  • Learning Objective: Clearly link the art activity back to the RS lesson's core learning goals.
  • Preparation: Have all materials ready and demonstrate steps clearly.

Integrating arts and crafts into your Religious Studies lessons is not just about making something pretty; it's about making a connection. By providing tangible experiences, you can help students explore faith with their hands, hearts, and minds.
