The First Verse of Every Book of the Bible...Yes, Really

The Opening Verses of Job

I love a good opening line.

From Pride and Prejudice's 'It is a truth universally acknowledged' to 'The past is a foreign country' from L. P. Hartley's The Go Between, a good opening line can set up so much of what is to come.

But what about the openers of the books of the Bible?

Do they also have the same effect when reading them?

This might be a bit of an unusual way to approach the Bible, looking at just the beginnings, but maybe we will discover new connections and insights along the way.

So, let's read the opening to every book of the Bible.

(For this today, we'll be using the ESV Bible translation)

Genesis

In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.

Exodus

These are the names of the sons of Israel who came to Egypt with Jacob, each with his household: Reuben, Simeon, Levi, and Judah, Issachar, Zebulun, and Benjamin, Dan and Naphtali, Gad and Asher.

There was a man in the land of Uz whose name was Job, and that man was blameless and upright, one who feared God and turned away from evil.

Psalms

Blessed is the man

Inasmuch as many have undertaken to compile a narrative of the things that have been accomplished among us, just as those who from the beginning were eyewitnesses and ministers of the word have delivered them to us, it seemed good to me also, having followed all things closely for some time past, to write an orderly account for you, most excellent Theophilus, that you may have certainty concerning the things you have been taught.

Paul, a servant of Christ Jesus, called to be an apostle, set apart for the gospel of God, which he promised beforehand through his prophets in the holy Scriptures, concerning his Son, who was descended from David according to the flesh and was declared to be the Son of God in power according to the Spirit of holiness by his resurrection from the dead, Jesus Christ our Lord, through whom we have received grace and apostleship to bring about the obedience of faith for the sake of his name among all the nations, including you who are called to belong to Jesus Christ,

That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we looked upon and have touched with our hands, concerning the word of life—the life was made manifest, and we have seen it, and testify to it and proclaim to you the eternal life, which was with the Father and was made manifest to us—that which we have seen and heard we proclaim also to you, so that you too may have fellowship with us; and indeed our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son Jesus Christ.

-

And that's all of them.

Did anything stand out to you reading through all of them?

Maybe things like:

  • What happened between 1 and 2 Timothy that Timothy went from being a 'true child in the faith' to 'my beloved child'?
  • Why do so many letters start with names when Hebrews opens like a fable with 'Long ago...'?
  • Was Luke quite as verbose in real life as his opener suggests?
  • Why do some prophets start with the 'Word of the Lord' when others have an 'Oracle'?
  • Is Lamentations the most underrated opening line in the Bible?

I'm sure much more has jumped out to you in reading this.

Maybe I should do the same for closing lines, too?

Something to think about.

In looking up these verses today, I used the Hosanna Revival ESV Journaling Bible in the Yorkshire Theme.
