How to Start Reading the Bible for the First Time

Estimated Read Time: 5 minutes

Sunlight on a Bible

Holding a Bible for the first time can feel a bit like holding a library in your hands. Because that is exactly what it is.

The Bible isn't just one book. It is a collection of 66 different books written over thousands of years. It contains poetry, history, letters, and laws. When you look at it that way, it is no wonder that knowing where to start feels overwhelming.

If you have decided that 2026 is the year you want to explore this book for yourself, you might be asking: Do I start at the beginning? Which translation should I buy? How do I actually understand it?

Relax.

You don't need a theology degree to read the Bible. You just need a simple place to start.

Here is your step-by-step guide to opening the book with confidence.

In short:

How do I start reading the Bible as a beginner?
To start reading the Bible effectively, follow these four simple steps. First, choose an easy-to-read translation like the New Living Translation (NLT) or New International Version (NIV) rather than older, complex language. Second, do not start at the beginning (Genesis); instead, start with the Gospel of Mark or John in the New Testament to learn about Jesus first. Third, read in short bursts of 10 to 15 minutes. Finally, ask simple questions as you read, such as "What does this say about God?" and "How can I apply this to my life?"

Step 1: Pick the Right Version

Imagine trying to read Shakespeare when you are just learning English. That is what it feels like for a beginner to read the King James Version (KJV) (or, some believe, might literally be the case). It is beautiful, but the "thees" and "thous" can be a barrier to understanding.

For your first Bible, you want clarity.

The NLT (New Living Translation):

This translates the ideas into modern English. It reads just like a normal book or magazine.

The NIV (New International Version):

This is the most popular modern translation. It strikes a balance between accuracy and readability.

Step 2: Don't Start at the Beginning

This is the most common mistake new readers make. They open to Genesis (page 1), read through the exciting stories of creation and Noah, and then hit the book of Leviticus. Leviticus is full of ancient laws and rituals, and this is usually where momentum dies.

Instead, we recommend starting with The Gospels.

The Gospels are the biographies of Jesus. Since Christianity is all about Jesus, it makes sense to start with his life.

  • Start with Mark: It is the shortest, fastest-paced account of Jesus’ life. It is action-packed and easy to follow.
  • Start with John: If you are looking for something more spiritual and reflective, John is a beautiful place to begin.

Step 3: Ask Three Simple Questions

You don't need to hunt for hidden codes. As you read a short passage (maybe half a chapter at a time), just ask yourself these three questions:

  1. What does this say about God? (Is He kind? Just? Powerful?)
  2. What does this say about people? (Are they struggling? Faithful? Afraid?)
  3. What does this mean for me? (Is there an example to follow or a promise to trust?)

Step 4: Pray Before You Read

This is what makes the Bible different from any other book. We believe it is a "living" word. Before you start reading, take ten seconds to close your eyes and ask God to help you understand what you are about to read. It doesn't need to be a fancy prayer. A simple "God, please help me see what you want me to know" is perfect.
