Catholic Bibles FAQs

What is the difference between a Catholic Bible and a Protestant Bible?

A Catholic Bible contains the full Catholic canon of Scripture, including the Deuterocanonical books such as Tobit, Judith, Wisdom, Sirach, Baruch and 1 & 2 Maccabees. Catholic Bibles therefore usually contain 73 books, compared with the 66 books found in most Protestant Bibles.

Which Catholic Bible translation should I choose?

The best translation depends on how you plan to use your Bible. The ESV Catholic Edition is a more word-for-word translation and is now used for Scripture readings in the Catholic Lectionary in England and Wales. The NRSV Catholic Edition is widely used for study, while translations such as the RSV Catholic Edition, Revised New Jerusalem Bible and Good News Bible Catholic Edition offer different balances of style and readability.

Which Bible translation is used at Catholic Mass in England and Wales?

Since Advent 2024, Catholic Mass readings in England and Wales have used the English Standard Version – Catholic Edition (ESV-CE), with the Abbey Psalms and Canticles used for the Responsorial Psalms. This makes the ESV-CE a useful choice if you would like your personal Bible to closely match the Scripture readings you hear at Mass.
